is it better to put the gen 4 ssd as the system disk or as teh sttorage disk? i have a pcie 3 slot that struggles to open file explorer, and a pcie 4 slot with a gen 4 sssd for games. . im considering making the gen 4 ssd the system disk and leave the pcie 3 slot as the storage disk?

PCI 3.0 or PCI 4.0, the most important specs is x4 (4 PCI bus lanes)

this just tests large files. this does not show if a 4.0 in a 3.0 slow has better random read/write as the controller on the ssd is better.

Pcie 3 4x, max speed 4gbps, if you insert this nvme in the pci 16x nvme expander it theoretically can have up to 16 gbps (1gb per one pcie line this is related to pcie 3 mb)

What if I have 2x samsung 990 2tb, on mb that has a pcie3, and I buy a nvme card 16x for two drives that i want in raid 0, what speed will I get? 16 gbps?

by the time i put my m.2 gen 4 on the pcie 3.0 slot cause i have an i9 10900 and cant use my pcie 4.0 slot i keep getting random bluescreens does anyone know how to fix this? I was wondering the same thing about the pcie 3/4 thing, but if i think about it, i think i m better off a buying Pcie 4 SSD now for my laptop, and when i change to a pc or maybe a better laptop i can take advantage of that Pcie-4 ssd in a Pcie 4 slot. But still depends if i can get 2 tb SSD of gen 3 for the same or just just slightly higher than 1 tb SSD of gen 4

My motherboard has a 1 Gen 3 and 1 Gen 4 slot. I have two Gen 4 M.2 SSDs and use them in both slots. It's more out of what I had vs what works best.

You are a Super Star, watched your MSI B550 TOMAHAWK video ref M.2 slots. Got my head around that. It's the simple stuff I get confused with lol. This was the last part of my puzzle. You are the only person I have found who clearly explains the relationship between these M.2 slots.. I have WD_BLACK 1TB SN770 M.2 2280 PCIe Gen4 and just bought WD_Black 1TB SN850X M.2 2280 PCIe Gen4 NVMe , never entered my head to check if they were compatible with my 2nd M.2 slot. Hope I've understood it all as I'm about to put SN 770 in second slot, already swapped them over so the faster is in the top (a few days ago) . I then remember i'd watched your B550 vid when i got my board, forgot about Gen 3 and 4 when buying second nvme so panicked when my memory reminded me. Fingers crossed they work ok, my brain is frazzled with little storage capacity let in it, age is a pain. Thank you so much. I seldon comment hense the essay.

Looking to upgrade my 1tb gen 3 Samsung 980 on second 3.0 slot to a 2tb...the prices on 2tb gen 4 m.2 have come down under $100 bucks and the gen 3 $20 bucks cheaper...should I get a 2tb 980pro gen 4 with heatsink for $100 or 2tb Crucial P3 gen 3 for $82 for the pcie 3.0 slot?

Great topic and video! I figured peak performance would be bottlenecked by PCIe 3.0 limits.
The two questions I'm hoping someone has the answer to:
1) Once SLC Cache is depleted, would the sustained write speed be higher on the PCIe 4.0 card? Assuming the advertised speed is double (e.g. 7000 MB/s vs 3500 MB/s), since TLC memory typically slows to ~1/3 speed once the cache is full, would PCI 4.0 TLC memory perform at ~2333MB/s once the cache is full vs ~1,166MB/s for PCI 3.0 since at sustained speeds it's not theoretically bottlenecked by the ~3500MB/s cap of PCI 3.0?
2) since the drive is capable of higher speeds than permitted by PCI 3.0, would there be a reduced possibility of thermal throttling?

If you are getting a good deal, like I did on 1TB NVME, yes it's worth it, you can move it up to your future system, and it will run really cool if it isn't hitting it as hard.
Not every answer is to do with performance.

And gen 4 pricing is very close to gen 3 now- sometimes even a little less.

I know this video is a little old by now, but would a Gen 4 SSD make a difference in a Gen 3 slot in regard to temperature and/or power draw? While kind of a silly question, the price of chips in general have caused numerous parts to drop in price to the point where I can occasionally see the gap between Gen 3 and Gen 4 getting closer. I was just curious because some users of 400 series or lower motherboard, or Cezanne or older Ryzen CPUs are stuck to PCIe Gen3. 🤔

How about the random reads. Does the 4th gen retain its RR in a pcie3 slot or it gets reduced? Thanks in advance.
