I love this cyclic age of information, we've come full circle.
I wonder what we'll have to rediscover in 20 years from now...

Genuinely, is this not just the basically, commonest most knowledge ever?

Sincerely, being born... In 1982, first thing the doctor, while smoking a cigarette and a scotch in his other hand, held me upside down, gave me the scotch, and said, "Kensington Locks, it looks like this... Nobody every really uses it except for business, and people that don't want their shit shit on...", I declined the cigarette.

Even I knew they were bad for you... and I weres um faking toaddler!

I always knew the general idea of what they were, but they always perplexed me
I mean, if you think about it, even if the lock itself is metal, a system can only be as secure as its container... And most of the time, that container is plastic
Wouldn't you rather have a display case for devices like this? Something made of some sort of durable glass or super thick acrylic, with some metal at the back with holes for ventilation? It may be more expensive, but if you're putting these things on display, you're planning on making money off of them anyways

Now that y'all know about it, you'll never not see it everywhere.

You have a laptop? It's got one.
A flat screen tv? I can guarantee it has one
A monitor? There's a pretty high chance it's got one too

They are just everywhere!

The Kensington lock is only really designed to prevent casual theft. The lock is deliberately stronger than the case of the device where it is mounted, so just trying to snap or twist it off, or cut it off with a hacksaw blade will cosmetically damage the device.
The lock has 3 pins in a row which fit into the slot, the outer two pins prevent the lock from being rotated in the slot (they may also be hardened, I’ve never tried to cut them). The middle pin is longer and is T shaped about the width of the slot, when locked the T rotates 90° to keep it in the slot.
The lock is on the end of a cable with a loop at the other end, the idea being to put the cable around or through something fixed or heavy (radiator, desk cable hole, etc), pass the lock through the loop then attach it to the device. The cable is tough enough that wire cutters or scissors won’t cut through. The lock is usually a cylinder lock, though combination locks are also available, as are master keyed and keyed alike sets.

Kensington locks are more of a detterant then actual theft prevention. At work we had a kiosk machine which we sadly lost the key to the lock. Took less then 5 seconds to pop the lock out of the "secure" slot. I suppose the security improves if the device manufacturer takes the structual integrity of the slot into consideration.

Usually means a Kingston lock which allows you to secure the device with a metal cable to a desk etc.
That one isn't attached to anything inside the casing though, which means it's useless.
