Boulder and his owner just made the long trek down from Virginia to TGD New Orleans. They’re in need of some serious help. After taking in Boulder from friends who had kids which Boulder wasn’t safe around, they’ve tried to navigate life with him—but have had recurring resource guarding issues and bites—some rather severe.

A few things to take away from this video:

-Trainers, remember how stressful this (the drop off) can be for owners. Try to make it as comfortable as possible, even as you work to get info/details. It’s clear to see how difficult the situation is. Pointing out mistakes and possible inadequacies, and making owners who are already overwhelmed isn’t helpful. There’s time for that in your updates and go-homes. The more comfortable/safe and un-judged a client feels, the more likely they are to share more insightful, and often less savory info and decisions they’ve made. Put them on the defense or judgment path, and that will all be highly filtered.

-Owners, the fact that your dog might be unsure, nervous, or even fearful, isn’t an excuse for aggression. Even if a dog is legitimately in one of these states, they CAN absolutely make different, safer decisions—but only if required to do so. The dog’s perception about the social dynamics between them and you are the largest determiner of these choices. Dogs will take opportunities offered if they feel they serve them—even injuring you—they have no moral code involved. Remember, no passes for aggression, no matter what.

If you’ve got a dog you need help with, be it puppy challenges, adult off-leash obedience and manners, or serious behavior issues, The Good Dog’s unique approach to training and rehabilitation has been helping owners and dogs find their way for over 15 years. Give us a shout if you need help with yours. ❤️
