The sounds of a Powerful Owl calling at dawn in Sydney's Royal National Park. This recording was made just before dawn and captures a series of deep, slow ‘woo-hoo’ calls which are diagnostic of the species. In the background you can also hear the sweet dawn song of a Bassian Thrush (Zoothera lunulata). Between 0:00 and 1:32 a female Powerful is calling making the typical double note song. At 1:32 she is joined by the male who begins making the lower-pitched faster gruff call followed by a few lower pitcher double note calls. Towards the end of the video you can hear some softer interaction calls between the two. More examples and information about Powerful Owl calls can be found on my website https://wildambience.com/wildlife-sounds/powerful-owl/

April is a good time to hear the sounds of Powerful Owls as they are entering the breeding season and often call just before dawn and just after dusk.

The Powerful Owl (Ninox strenua) is Australia’s largest owl species. Found in forests and woodlands of south-eastern Australia, Powerful Owls are generally uncommon and have been adversely affected by land clearing. However they can sometimes be found living in urban areas and even in city parks such as the Royal Botanical Gardens in Sydney.

Thank you so much for this audio! I have been woken 2 mornings in a row at about 6am to this sound and I was unsure whether it was powerful owl or tawny frogmouth - now I know it’s the former 🦉 🙏✨🙏🏾 I was surprised by how close to daybreak it was calling..

Where can I report that I have powerful owls so that I can conserve this area and trees? I witnessed one two weeks ago swooping down and grabbing a flying fox. It was unbelievable!!!!

It's 1.15am and I can hear one calling now for the second night in a row, down in the valley towards Oxford Falls, on Sydney's Northern Beaches. Unfortunately I've never seen one, only the headless possum and bloody footprints one left on next door neighbour's side path!

I went down to investigate the banging on the shed roof at St Andrews (Melbourne) - it was a Powerful Owl getting the Ringtail Possums as they went home. It swooped me 3 times, telling me to go away. (I took the hint when I felt the wind from its wings).

I am positive that I listen to a female every couple of nights in South Eastern suburbs of Melbourne. She's very good at taking our possums and I have seen her. She's huge.
