Ответить“What we do in life echoes in eternity.” — Maximus (Gladiator) classic movie 🎥

ОтветитьThe award-winning classic film Gladiator is an adventure/action film released in May of 2000. It was distributed by Universal Pictures and DreamWorks Pictures, directed by Ridley Scott, and produced by David Franzoni, Douglas Wick, and Branko Lustig. It stars great actors like Russell Crowe, along with Joaquin Phoenix, Connie Nielsen, Oliver Reed, Derek Jacobi, Djimon Hounsou, and Richard Harris. This movie was based on Daniel P. Mannix’s 1985 book Those About to Die. Following its release, Gladiator won five Academy Awards at the 73rd Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Actor for Crowe. This movie is considered one of the best movies of the 2000s and it is known as one of the greatest historical epic films ever made. Gladiator demonstrates the importance of honor and the duty that a soldier owes to his country.
Gladiator follows the victories Roman general, Maximus (Russell Crowe), who is chosen by Emperor Markus Aurelius (Richard Harris) to be his successor, instead of the rightful heir, Markus’ son Commodus. The emperor commands Maximus to take command at his death, to bring an end to the corruption in Rome, and to give the power back to the people by instating the Senate as the supreme ruler. Moved by jealousy and ambition, Commodus takes power into his own hands and becomes the new emperor following Markus Aurelius' unexpected death. To secure his power over Rome, Commodus wields his power by silencing any opposition to his crown, and by plotting to dissolve the senate throughout the whole movie. On the other hand, after Maximus escapes his attempted murder, he is sold into slavery where he is then bought by a man who trains gladiators. Although Maximus feels as if he has nothing to live for, he realizes that he must fulfill the previous’ emperors wish, and return power to the senate, against all odds. There are many unexpected twists and betrayals, but Maximus perseveres until the end until he fulfills his mission.
Although Gladiator is rated r for intense graphic content, Scott manages to always show graphic scenes for the right reasons. One of these scenes is toward the beginning of the movie, where Maximus is shown fighting amid his soldiers against the Germanic tribes, there are many graphic scenes of the bloodiness of the war. But Scott only shows enough blood and gore to get the message across that Maximus is a noble, strong, and courageous general who fights alongside his soldiers, setting an example for his men. These scenes set up the stage for the rest of the movie as Maximus is shown as a skilled fighter, who later takes his skills to the arena, defeating any man before him, no matter how strong they may be.
As this movie is based on the Roman empire, it is common for these big movies to have some kind of sexual content since the Romans were known for their immoral sexual behaviors. But Scott did a phenomenal job of only including a minimal amount of sexual content to get his message across. Throughout the movie, Commodus tries to incestuously kiss his sister, and even towards the end, tries to lay in bed with her. But in every single one of these scenes, his sister Lucilla can slip away from his grip, and Commodus backs away. By doing this, Scott restricts the sexual scenes to a minimum by only going as far as needed to portray Commodus as a truly evil and tyrannical emperor. Even though many other directors would not be afraid of including some sexual or nude scenes, Scott refused to include a single one to be able to target younger men without exposing them to sexual immorality.
Gladiator is based around 120 A.D. in which the games in the Colossian were popular, where Romans would go fights between men, or between men and animals. The previous emperor, Markus Aurelius had these games banned from Rome as he understood that they were not healthy for the Roman citizens. But the new and evil emperor Commodus brought them back to entertain the people and to win their love for him. It is upon these facts that this movie’s story plot is partly based, but throughout the movie, Scott seems to convey that Maximus only fights in these gladiator fights for an honorable cause, to fulfill his ultimate mission. There are many scenes throughout the movie where Maximus grossly kills his opponents, but these fights are only shown to show Maximus’s heroism and courage as he faces opponents much bigger than him. In addition, when Maximus begins his gladiator career after he kills multiple gladiators, he famously says “Are you not entertained? Is this not why you are here?” By saying this, Maximus seems to be upset about the fact that he has to kill for entertainment. Maximus recognizes how inhuman these shows were, but he only continues to fight when he realizes that by doing so, he has the opportunity to fulfill his mission.
Rome is known to have been one of the greatest empires of all time for its great and honorable virtues. Roman citizens were taught to be loyal, faithful, courageous, strong, and strong family ideals. These virtues, amongst many others, are portrayed by the main character Maximus throughout the movie. One of the most iconic scenes is when Maximus is asked by the emperor to reveal himself for the first time as a gladiator, and he responds: “My name is Maximus Decimus Meridus, commander of the armies of the north, general of the Felix legions, loyal servant to the true emperor Markus Aurelius. Father to a murdered son, husband to a murdered wife.” Maximus conveys his loyalty by presenting himself as a servant to the “true” emperor even though emperor Commodus could at that very moment have him killed for his blasphemy. In addition, Maximus seems to convey that his identity rests upon the fact he was a father, a husband, and a loyal servant as a soldier. By doing this, Scott conveys to his audience true manly virtues.
One of the most well-known scenes from Gladiator is when Maximus and the other gladiators in his group are put in the arena to fight multiple gladiators on chariots. Even though the gladiators are put under the worst conditions, with only a shield and a spear, they work together to defeat their enemy. At this moment, Maximus finally admits that he was a Roman soldier, and says “Whatever comes out of these gates, we've got a better chance of survival if we work together.” Totally at peace, and with a courageous look, Maximus tells this to his men inspiring the viewer to not be afraid to face their enemies, no matter how unfair the battle may appear to be. Against all odds, Maximus and his men can defeat the barbarians on chariots by working together and facing their enemy with courage and tenacity.
Apart from its intriguing plot, Gladiator is known for its magnificent scenes of what the Colosseum must have looked like back when it was still used. By using smaller replicas and other filming techniques, Scott was able to recreate what the Coliseum looked like when it was used as a huge amphitheater. For the technology that was available in 2000, these scenes are very impressive as they show, in a very realistic way for the time, the great beauty of Rome. By doing this, Scott portrays the great power and wealth that Rome had at the time. One of these iconic scenes is when the gladiators first arrive at the Colosseum, and we are given a panoramic shot of the outside of the Colosseum, along with a shot from the arena inside the Colosseum.
Gladiator was released at the beginning of the new millennium, and I believe his goal was to target younger men and inspire them to be heroic like these great Roman heroes. As humanity entered a new millennium, Scott used this epic to inspire many young men to not be afraid of facing giant “gladiators” or fears, against all odds. Constantly putting Maximus under unfavorable conditions, made him the great underdog that many young men could relate to. Although Maximus had to fight gladiators much bigger than him, with more armor and better weapons, Maximus never showed any fear before his opponents. Even in the scene where Maximus is in the arena waiting for the opponents to be released, having no idea of who his enemy may be, Maximus with total control and valor tells his men to fight together to stay alive. By doing so, Scott wanted to inspire his audience to do the same when they are faced with any problems that they may feel they are not able to overcome. In union with the men that God puts around us and His grace, we can face and overcome all of the problems that we are faced with throughout our lives.
ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED???????
