I come from a small sawmill town in Oregon. Grew up in a trailer, that my father kept adding on to create an attached living room and a small room where my 4 sibling sisters shared as their bedroom. He worked sawmills for over 50 years of his life. My oldest Sister was the first, in the entire extended family to attain a College Degree (But, it wasn't until she was well into her 40's). I was drafted during the Vietnam War and ended up making a career in the Navy because I didn't want to go home and work in the sawmill. It was my out, so to speak from the turmoil of the Timber industry. Alas, that too fell apart. Between the early 1980's and 1990's, because of greed by those who HAD at the expense of those who HAD NOT 5 of those mills went out of business. At the time, I was an E-4 making $8,000 a year on my Navy pay. Unfortunately for our little community, I was better off than most of my old classmates who continued to work at the mills, which were all closing. We had 6 mills back then. After 12 years of Reagan / G.H.W. Bush that number reduced to only one operating mill. To this day, it is still the only mill in town and only employs about 100 people. It has only been post-COVID that the town has shown signs of recovery. 15 years ago Walmart came to town and became the final nail in the coffin of downtown small business. The Democrat-run State of Oregon, which paid for the re-education programs of the displaced workers, made the recovery possible. Long way to get to the point, but...Brando, you are right about, "Will their pain, and knowledge (that's a stretch) of what caused it, resonate into understanding as to their plight?" Unfortunately, many of those who I grew up with have not. They Sheepally (I'm sure that is not a real word, yet fitting) fell in line and voted to re-install the worst President in history. I, too, don't want to be the guy who tells them all, "I told you so!" But that is exactly what needs to happen and I will hold that torch all day long and as long as it takes. When Brexit came along people voted to get out of the EU to stop immigration, to stop the scroungers from coming over, to stop the EU 'corruption' and guess what after three miserable years when restaurants had to close because of a lack of seasonal staff, industries had to close or layoff people because of reduced businesses, groceries prices have gone sky high, now after three years people are realising what a daft idea was to come out of the EU, they wish they had not voted for Brexit and there was a way to get back into the EU.
