When you say "striped three way mirror" are you referring to a traditional Raid 5 with three OptAne drives?

Alright, so how do I get started setting this up in TrueNAS scale? I've bought 2x Optane 118gb and have them ready for mirroring and use as a Metadata drive! A little nudge in the right direction would be much appreciated 😎

I'm working on my first build, 5x14TB. No idea how much I would need.

as far as i know intel optane is more focused on servers, for personal computers i don't think i've ever heard of it anymore

If my Synology NAS supported NVMe Cache I would look at an Optane drive, but otherwise I have no use for it on anything else, that I am aware of. :)

No surprise Optane was phased out, as ferroelectric RAM (FRAM) memory chips have so many reliability and retention problems that Optane SSDs just die for no reason at all. So, Intel saw the writing on the wall owing to the problems Optane SSDs have been seeing, thus ceasing to work on 3D XPoint FRAM technology as whole. It would honestly work better with higher capacity magnetoresistive RAM (MRAM) chips instead, and I wouldn't be surprised if Intel brings Optane back in the future, this time with better bulk storage MRAM chips. It's a shame it was hampered by well-known FRAM problems.

Can these be used with Linux HoloISO? Would be cool to get a 2TB HDD with this.

I just snagged a P1600X 118 GB for about 80 bucks from Amazon. The very last one I could purchase here in Germany and that's only because it's shipped from the US. I think I'm gonna make it a boot drive!

I am sorta curious if you could use the optane ddr4 dimm on something like the x99 dual socket rig I want to make, I think it would be similarly useful, but idk if it works with just linux mint, and zfs natively, or at all. If anyone knows where to point me, I'd love to learn more about the dimms specifically, as the info out there seems pretty minimal for the home gamer

Good video but mechanical drives have more than 1 read/write head. Depending on the model they may have several. That Seagate Ironwolf drive you have has 5 platters and ten heads for example.

I use the 16GB optane modules as boot drives for firewalls (pfsense.) The H20 would work in theory in an AMD system if you could bifurcate the nvme 4x slot into 2x2.

What is a good ratio of optane to HDD?

I thought that Intel Optane is the future of storage, but Intel dropped it!
Such a shame!
Not only that, but SSD vendors also dropped SLC & MLC NAND!
TLC on PCIe 5.0 is worse than SLC/MLC on PCIe 3.0!
