Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition Review - The Classic Stuns Yet Again

Looks promising, but unfortunately that horrid 'fog of war' crap is a huge non-starter for me. Can't live with it in any game.

The menu UI design so simple just like some random mobile game, and the background artwork...Err... cool, but not really well done as first view sir, I like painting in the handy style like the concept art way to go, but this one just not really hit it.

Imagine if your job was "watch every T90 video ever and develop the AI from those."

I just bought this on my Xbox series s and I haven't played it yet.. but I remember buying the original age of empires and I just bought myself a computer and it was basically random when I went to the store and to buy this I just wanted to see if you actually does play and fortunately I picked the age of empires and I was so addicted to the game... My cousin when used to come over with sit for hours silently and watch me play the game.. so based on the review and these comments I made a good decision on buying it.. I've been a gamer all my life so I played a lot of classics and it's nice to see like they remake certain games like Dead space and resident evil 4.. I know this is a sequel but it shows you that back in my day we had a lot of good games and classic ones...

i remember first playing this game back in 2002. with a computer that has 128MB RAM! and 64MB onboard graphics card.

I just got this game since it was part of game pass but damn it reminded me of the goodold days before the greed took over and made games into gamblers best friend. Thus fur it's been so much fun to just be avle to game with no microtransacgions and the feeling i could have baught it and enjoy it...good times 😁

Between the new and old music, i still play the old one while playing the DE version of the game. I do wish they add a large map option like they did in Age of Mythology where you can go from small to large and be able to see where the relics are if you've uncovered parts of the map. The other thing i'd like included is the info in regards to the units and buildins, something AOM had. It was a nice little read, specially with myth units or heros.

Ok what about new players wanting to pick it up is it worth it

Saw this on GamePass, never played it. I thoroughly enjoyed games like Star Craft and Battle for Middle Earth back in the day. Hopefully I'll find this a banger.

My experience of Age of Empires 2 Dement Edition... (At least the version of it I have tried) has the worst AI in Empires of Empires history !!!
Want to build a wall ? They start by walking 180 degrees in the other direction...
Your tower gets attacked. NO tower (of 1, 2, 4, 8 towers or whatever) will defend the tower. They shot at a f***ng enemy building instead !
Can not direct my arrows from a tower (or Castle) on a villager that is going to repair a ram. How much I try I can not stear what my own towers shot at !
Send 6 villagers hunting a bore. Sometimes 4 hunts and 2 just stand still !
A villager gets attacked by a Wolf. I send it to my TC and wants it to ignore the Wolf (to be able to save the villager). No it then stops and attacks the Wolf instead...
This is just some examples. To call it "Definite Edition" is hybris at 100 on a scale from 1 to 10... This is the worst AI (and pathfinding) in the history of AoE ! (I am playing right now and am getting mad, for the 1000th time.)
(By the way, if someone think I am not enough experienced to claim that I can say that I have played AoE almost every week since the DEMO of Age of Empires I in 1997 !!)

Am I the only one that remembers enjoying Age of Mythology the most lol? Maybe I’m on the younger end of the crowd but the hero’s/gods was always way more intriguing to me then the history within Age of Empires. Would love to see them bring back the Mythology.

This has sure been a part of my childhood, since I was born in 92. Now that its on Xbox Gamepass I sort of "found it again" after at least 15 years. Man, this game has aged well 😅

As a veteran of Age of Empires: Rise of Rome, i have to admit now that i finally played the second game that its like playing on easy mode: Gold is way too easy the get. You can buy gold at the market and what using trade cart or merchant ships, you get gold for free... That's like unlimited money, it feels like a cheat code to me and here is why:
In the first game you cant build farms in dark age (stone age) and need market to unlock farming. Market is where you research your economic tech and allows to send tributes. You cannot buy gold nor use gold to buy resources. Trade carts do not exist, but we do get merchant ships. However, merchant ships have to use other existing resources to get gold, its either 20 wood, food or stone for 7 gold and each dock have 100% meter that goes down by 20% each time a trade is made, takes 20 in game seconds to refill 20% of its 100% meter. So you can trade for gold but it costs resources and you can't just spam trade nonstop.
Makes you think before spending your resources on random things.
Also: Gold piles only have 400 gold instead of 800. Trees have 40 wood instead of 100, lone trees have 75 wood. Stone piles have 250 instead of 350. All fish have 250 including shore fish instead of 200. Berry bushes are more numerous and have 150 food instead of 125, gazel aka deer have 150 and decay much slower. Elephants instead of boar have 400 food and are in groups of 3 or 4, but they walk much faster then boars and hit harder so you must have groups of 7 or more villagers to kill one otherwise it will kill all your villagers. Garison doesn't exist so don't even try to lure it. Lions and crocodiles are like wolves but you can get food from them, they each have 100 food but it decays super fast. Farms actually are more expensive to build at 75 wood instead 60/36 and houses are 30 wood and gives only 4 pop instead of 5. Most tech costs lost of gold instead of food and are more expensive then on the second game.

I have been playing Age of Kings since it’s release in 99 and never wanted to upgrade with any of the expansions or releases following it mainly due to one factor: I detest playing with the standard exploration mode. I only play with the game map already travelled but noticed this option absent in the Conquerors. Hence, I’ve assumed all further editions are also without that option. Can you tell me anything about this? Do any recent versions including HD and Definitive allow this option? Also, do the online versions where you play against other people allow this as an option?

Is there such a game that allows you to gather more resources and build more stuff similar to Age of Empires? I mean you can't even gather iron when Iron age starts.
