Considering what the Nazis did to Russians the Russian soldiers were very self-controlled.

I dont get it! Germans attack SSSR , ravage their lands , slaughter their people, rape their women and burn their fields. And after that they complain that the Soviet soldiers did the exactly the same things to them. The way I see it: Germans got it good the way they were conducting and of course their women got raped. Neither the first time something like that happened in the war nor it was the worst crime that war bought.

Allied forces were just a bunch of rapists. During the Aglo - Boer war 1899-1902 the Enlish raped the Boer women and girls in the concentration camp. The English burnt down the Boer houses and farms and exterminated all the livestock. The victor always rewrites history.

It looks to me that people who wrote crying comments here CANNOT even nearly imagine what Germans did during the WWII to other countries, especially in Poland and former USSR.

And to the question of why the Germans had to endure the horrors of violence from soldiers. My father, mentioning the violence of Soviet soldiers against Germans in East Prussia, explained that it was not accidental. He recalled that his front was moving through Belarus (formerly part of the USSR). Both he and his soldiers saw that most of the villages and towns there were burned by the retreating Germans. And in the burned villages, all their inhabitants who did not hide in the forests were killed and piled up. He especially remembered how, after entering one of these villages, the soldiers wanted to drink and found a well. And suddenly they called him: "Comrade Lieutenant, look!" The father came up and saw that the well was filled to the top with the corpses of peasants, and on top lay the bloodied children who had been killed. There was a dead silence. My father did not make angry speeches. He only said to his subordinates: "Remember this!" After which, he turned around and left. And in the evening he heard his "battery" subordinates saying that they would take revenge on the Germans for everything... So they (and other soldiers of the front) took revenge on the Germans. Moreover, German soldiers committed violence against Russian women no less, who then had to give birth to half-blooded children. And everyone knew it... So, after the war, Stalin even ordered to collect these half-breeds (if the mothers did not want to educate) and send them to orphanages. And so that the teachers did not "gnobil" the children (so as not to be bullied), they were given Russian names and surnames. Therefore, THERE WAS NO MASS VIOLENCE IN Berlin. For this, the guilty Soviet soldiers were shot in front of their comrades (my father was present at such an execution). So, no need to tell fables. After the capture of Berlin, soldiers could move around the city ONLY in FORMATION and accompanied by officers. Although there were some excesses, which my father witnessed in Berlin (I'm talking about the shooting of guilty Soviet soldiers). And these executions have become a lesson for particularly violent warriors.

The Russians haven't changed at al since then. They behaved the exact same way in Ukraine.

I don’t think it’s a trait of one army than the other. The soldiers accept it or not are trained to attack than protect. Wow. This comment section is a fine example of why we are totally screwed. ALL of US. Too many people are still fighting over this shit? Why is it so difficult to say, “ Yeah, my country and/or ancestors did some terrible things. And I’m so grateful that war time is not upon us and pray it never comes again.” We have more in common that brings us all together than differences.

While its naturally horrible, as war itself is. As many have pointed out here, it is not just one side that did this. This is very common in war even today. That's true,but for a better understanding, you need to know what the Germans did with the civilian population in Russia. I don't justify Russians (I'm from Poland) but for example, the German order: Russian women soldiers must be liquidated immediately after being caught -or murders of civilians in Russia when entire villages were liquidated,children, women, old people, everyone. German propaganda fueled this by claiming that in the east live only subhumans not real humans, in this war every Russian soldier lost a family members,friends. Western Europe has never experienced such scale of German crimes. As I wrote, I'm not justifying russian soldiers (In Poland we have some problems with them too) I'm explaining technically "why?"
