I've.been wanting to see this commercial in its entirety for quite some time ever since I found that a portion was shown in the movie "The Buddy Holly Story"

The point of calling something racist is to show when a stereotype demeans one group while warping the impressions of another. It's doesn't mean you can't appreciate the aesthetics of that media. I think the commenters are somewhat missing the point by defending the commercial as "a product of its time" because that doesn't mean it wasn't racist in 1958, it just means racist attitudes against Asians were comparably more common and more overlooked in 1958.

Ironic that this commercial appeared on "I Love Lucy" in 1956...and I'm amazed that people haven't complained about the stereotype that Ricky Ricardo could have become...

Is this racist because you think it's racist or is it racist because liberals tell you it's racist?

Well here ya go folks.  "Throwback" is on the bandwagon along with people looking for reasons to retroactively crucify people of days gone by. Ironic that he calls himself "throwback." Good grief. Name-calling is just too easy. Calling it "very racist" because some people nowadays might call it that. Just feed go ahead and issue those retro-crucifying and criticising people more ammo. Jeeeez, get over it. Okay now go ahead and put a label on ME. ugh.

I am 63 years old and I can truthfully tell you NOBODY thought this commercial or many others which show asians or blacks as "racist". The difference is that back then nobody had skin so damn thin. Today all of the tree-hugging, global warming, PC crowd look to be offended and shout "racism" while in reality they don't know what racism truly is. Full of crap.

The problem with a lot of people today (especially younger ones) is they don't take into consideration the phrase "product of their times." This was made back when people weren't as sensitive to racial stereotypes than they are now. I'm not condoning making fun of other races, mind you, but why can't people understand times were different in the 50's than they are now? Learn from history, people! Ahem. Sorry, just needed to rant there.

Deliberately depicting a race as ugly and stupid is of course racism and very reprehensible. But I see none of that in this commercial. Japanese, Korean, and Chinese cartoonists often depict themselves this way and nobody stands up to shriek "racism!" at them. Maybe it's not the art style which is in question.  The moment we say, "Caucasians have no right to draw pictures of Asians--it's racism!", we are using race to disenfranchise a certain group of people, and that IS racism. We all have God-given racial characteristics and it's rather stupid to pretend that they don't exist. I showed this commercial to several Chinese friends. I asked them if they found it objectionable, and they asked me "Why would we?"

I'm Asian and tbh this ad is cute. I'm not offended.

It's very understandable to why people find this racist. Well at the time it was released, ads like that are deemed acceptable in American TV. It was 1958.

If it was made today, obviously it will get pulled from broadcast.
