Thanks for the comparison, now in 2023 there are lots of computers with access to only PCI 3.0 speeds, your video makes it easier to understood the benefit of the 980 Pro vs the 970 Evo Plus, and they are matching their prices.

Definitely worth to consider 980 Pro or even better SSDs

hi, i want to use it just for my OS drive on PCIE 3.0
I keep finding mixed results about power consumptions, the scales tipping a bit towards 980 pro
i know this is an old video, i wonder if someone has a good feedback for this or suggest a better nvme (excepting p31 gold) for low idle power

The Random reads are generally much more important, so the speed improvement in this area is significant

Is it normal reading speed slower than writing speed ?
If not? Is there any suggestion?

By the way my brand new and mostly empty 980 Pro running on Gen 3 has some very strange differences compared to yours:
The sequential values are pretty similar, but I get 579345 instead of 294433 Random Read speed and 166748 instead of 25292 Random Write speed. 🤨🤔
Could it be the faster write cache being full? I read it can take hours for it to recover its full write cache and there might even be Windows bugs that stop it from recovering at all.

I think either way the difference isn't worth the price premium unless you want future-proofing, IMO.

1tb 970 evo plus is 99 dollars and the 1tb 980 pro is 110. I think the extra 10 bucks is money well spent since I can swap it to a 4.0 board if/when I upgrade. Not much reason to buy the 970 evo plus anymore even though it's still a great drive. Heck the 1tb sn850x is only $99.

I have a Surface BOok2 , with 8gen CPU (i7-8650u), if I install 980 Pro, is it going to overheat? I heard 980 pro has overheating issue.
980 pro is currently on sale in my country, the price is quite similar to 970 evo plus

Nice and simple, I just picked up a 970PLUS because it's $50 cheaper than the 980PRO and I've learned that small differences like this really aren't noticeable.

So unless you have a gen 4 motherboard, save the 50 bucks lol.

I think you're being capped by the PCH speed on this one. I have a Samsung 970 EVO running on my X299X Waterforce using a PCI-Express addin card that came wit the motherboard, and I am reaching 3580mbps reads. Probably on this laptop, the M2 Pci Express 3.0 slot that you are using is being routed through the PCH and being capped by Intel's DMI.
I would like to know what would happen if we plug a Pci Express 4.0 NVME on a 3.0 slot, I think it would probably cap at 4.0gbps, but I am not sure yet, since I don't find tests where they test it in motherboards who have a decent connection from the PCI Express to the CPU without using the PCH.

Hello pretty interesting comparison, I have a Huawei Matebook 14 (early 2021 model) AMD 5 Ryzen 4600H and SSD 512 Samsung PM981a, I am thinking into installing a 1TB ssd but got confused which is the optimal solution, like you state on other comments go for the 980 Pro? pick 980 for lower consumption to have better battery life or go with the 970 evo plus (currently 970 evo plus and 980 have almost the same price). Also, in some videos I saw installing WDSN750. At the beginning I thought of the 970 evo plus but on the other side I was scared regarding the temperature (but looking at the datasheet the operation temperatures seem in paper identical with PM981), then i thought of 980 but the lack of DRAM holds me back, the 980 Pro seems the most logical option but don't know regarding the consumption if it is truly the best possible choice for me. It would be great If you could give me an advice regarding which is the best choice for my case? I am planning to stay a while with this laptop so no thoughts of an upgrade. Last but not least due to lack of space additional heatsink is not an option, so the to be installed ssd will operate without additional heatsink.
