STORYLINE:
US President George W Bush welcomed Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi to the White House on Thursday with the pomp due to a strong ally.
Hundreds of guests on the South Lawn waved miniature Japanese and American flags, amid trumpet fanfares and drum rolls, as Koizumi arrived at the White House in a limousine and was greeted by the president and his wife, Laura.
Members of a military colour guard also carried flags of the two countries and paraded in time to a march played by a military band.
In full dress uniform, ranks of servicemen and women from all branches filed in across the South Lawn and faced the dignitaries.
The two leaders smiled as Bush announced he would accompany Koizumi to Elvis' Graceland mansion in Memphis, Tennessee on Friday.
Koizumi is said to be a big fan.
Bush will fete the Japanese Prime Minister with a gala official dinner Thursday.
They are expected to discuss reported North Korean preparations to test-launch a long-range missile and Japan's support for the US fight against terror.
