I use the S1 mainly for video works along with my old GH5. I love the color and the footages felt thick. the only downside is I live in small city and almost every photographer/ videographer here use Canon DSLRs or Sony alphas. so It’s quite difficult to sell my camera or to work with second shooter who understand how to work with Lumix system.

If you consider it for paid gigs you should probably first rent or loan one of the DFD S cameras and try it out in low-contrast low-light conditions to test the limits.

The S1R is the real stills diamond. 45 megapixels!! Using Leica technology! With native Leica/Sigma lens designs, so most lenses will render very well on these 45mp. S1R can be had for just a bit more than the S1. The Panasonic stills community is small though, anyone coming from Nikon/Canon will probably ignore Panasonic. But coming from Pentax I appreciate the underdog status.

seeing it used with warranty for 1700 euro with the 24-105 that's basically a few hundred bucks for the camera ...

maybe someone here could answer this: Question #1: How do you map the RED FOCUSING LIGHT to a CUSTOM BUTTON ?
Question #2 : How do you switch off " PLEASE USE THE FLASH" in iA ( idiot) mode ?

I have used the S5, S1 and S5II. The S1 has the best video quality. The 5,9K and 6K Open Gate are better than on the S5II. When using V-Log they are close, but the S1 has slightly more details (true details, not sharpening), more micro-contrast and less digital sharpening. With the other profiles, they are not even close, especially in 4K where the S5II has very low details (some details are too much accentuated and some are not at all) and much more digital sharpening. Almost like the picture was upscaled from a lower resolution. I don't know what Panasonic has done at the hardware or software level with the S5II, but the magic is gone for me.

That s1 is around the same price as the s5 ii and the original 5 is less. The s1r is sometimes around the 1800 price on Amazon.

The same situation as yours here: I’m a happy G9 User willing to use both Lumix Systems. S5 would be an ergonomic downgrade from G9! S1 is a great Camera, was able to Find a brand new copy (a photographer’s backup camera) for 1000 usd! Amazing professional body. Things to consider: video autofocus less reliable than G9; IBIS for video worse than G9; less frames per second; no G9 style pre-capture; no 1/3200 SS meaning you might need an ND filter to shoot fully open at a beach…

The S1 has a small leg up on the S5 for strobist photographers - in that it has a 1/320th flash sync speed - vs- 1/200 on the S5...then there's the S1H that has an anti alias filter - which is also nice for stills & video shooters alike, but the S1 doesn't have that. I think over all - with the software updates, the S5 is a better camera and video tool than the S1 - plus the SQD card for the S1 is too expensive for me. I've had the S5 for a few years and opted not to upgrade yet. The new S5ii does not have multi exposure mode - like the S1 and S5 do - it lets you shoot up to four flash shots and the camera blends the shots together with only new areas of luminosity added (in a single RAW file!) this allows me, as a real estate photographer, to use just one small flash to light multiple area in one frame....kinda bummed they dropped that function in the S5ii

I've had the S1 for since 2020 and the best things going for it is how similar your 'muscle memory' of where all the dials and buttons are when using it, especially as you have the G9. Yes it's a beast with the weight comparison to the S5 system (which I also have) but each time I want to do any stills I prefer to use the S1. The firmware updates that Panasonic have done over the last three years have all been solid and added more confidence in the system for me. I also did the V-Log upgrade for it about a year ago and that was also worth the investment.

If you wear glasses then S1 is excellent due to the large, high resolution EVF. The S5 is substandard in this regard (as is the s5II).

I absolutely love my S1. Was considering selling it once I got the s5iix but the value has gone down so much that I'd rather keep it. Amazing dynamic range. I've have some of my favourite live band photos look nearly all white out of camera and I was able to recover the photo perfectly. Great camera and I highly suggest it. i LOVE the size and the video capabilities. A lot of people dislike how big it is but I love it. Feel like a quality camera and I haven't had a single issue, other than video files not saving on cheap SD cards

Why buys new?? and not shop around for a second hand one? You might get a better price and maybe save some money for another lens. - just at thought

Never used the s1 but the s5 is awesome. L mount is definitely the move.

S1 Beautiful solid well spec'd but very big and heavy. I'd go for S5

I picked up the S1 a month after it was released, I had nothing but good experiences with the camera. I'm 100% in on L mount.

I moved down from the s1 to the s5 because of the weight, especially with the 24-105mm. Not the size, just the weight. Its an amazing camera/ lens combo, the viewfinder will spoil you to the point that you'll hate every other camera. For pro work it's properly worth using one xqd card and using the SD for backup but personally, I never had an SD card fail on me. knock on wood If you will be rough with the camera s1 is the better choice, much better build than the s5. Its all about the weight, if you are used to light m43 setups you might hate such a heavy and hefty camera, even with a light prime. Still miss the s1 on some days, vintage lenses with the viewfinder are chefs kiss. With the paid update you get 6k open gate, which is something to consider. Only using it for photography might be a bit of a waste making the s5 the better choice. You will shot videos on either camera you pick up at some point. I would rent it for a weekend if possible :)
