i thought i would post a comment to explain - jd's dad is indeed the green construction worker (while his mom is blue, making a cyan child. color jokes!). but what he did wasn't on purpose, or due to malicious intent (jd's mom walked in knowing what would happen). i wanted to frame the flashback so it was in the perspective of jd, who resents his dad and would most likely only remember his comfort food (the slushie) in a traumatic situation.

tldr: jd's dad leaving a slushie / not bothering to talk to jd is more symbolic than literal. communication is important kids

..JD mentions not needing cocaine, but that is a drug that makes you feel more aware, more energised.
JD could have very well lived a life of alcoholism, since all of the effects he describes are those of alcohol.
1) freeze your brain
Alcohol prohibits certain neurotransmitters. It literally slows your brain down.
2) happiness comes when everything numbs
Alcohol numbs you down, this is why a lot of people use it to escape their problems in the short term
3) swim in the ice, fight pain with more pain
You know that alcohol is bad for you. It feels like a better pain than the one before that, because you chose it.

I do wish JD got to live longer, but these parts of his character hit me as a person with alcoholism. It shows a dependency on something that you know is bad.
(Ofc having a slurpee is not really bad, but this is me having seen the musical.)
He is more dependent on the idea of destroying something. And he ends up harming the ppl around him.

drink less. It's worth it.
