All your videos are great. Learn a great deal and learn the "why" for most things, making the concepts stick far better.
ОтветитьSecond best marker is a mechanical pencil. Pentel is a standard brand. Choose from lead thickness 0.5, 0.7, 0.9 and hardness 2H, H, HB.
ОтветитьSimple and awsome! ❤ Some alternative might be to use thin automatic pencil 😊
ОтветитьNow how about a adjustable story stick for measuring inside window frames.
ОтветитьThis is the real scheisse
Ответитьthis is a good method, going back to the measuring tape/ruler should be conserved to one piece and then mirrored with a straight perpendicular edge.
ОтветитьBrilliant.
ОтветитьHow can you possibly give this video a 'thumbs down'? The man is spitting jewels
ОтветитьI've never heard anyone besides my dad say "Good enough for government work." Instant credibility!
Wish I'd seen this video sooner. I'm halfway through making crude kitchen cabinets.
Excellent video and its nice to see these skills and methods kept alive. I like to attach a small piece of flat quarter or half inch plywood at the beginning of my story sticks. This way I have a visual and physical reference point - learnt this in a ‘teachable moment’.
ОтветитьI rarely add videos to my "Masterclass, Stone, Steel, Wood" playlist.
I added this one.
FIRST PERSON IVE HEARD TALK ABOUT PARALLAX W/A TAPE MEASURE I THOUGHT I WAS CRAZY
ОтветитьI will almost certainly never build anything that depends on this level of accuracy, precision and repeatability.
Nevertheless, I know I learned concepts and practices I did not know before, and I believe I am better for it.
thank you.... this is the best carpentry advice I've seen in a long time
ОтветитьAlways. I Always get a great "why didn't I think of that before??" moment when watching your videos. This time it was using a metal ruler at 90 degrees to eliminate paralax. Duh.... :)
I can't tell you how much I value your channel.
PS I couldn't tell if you were using the phrase "good enough for govt work" in its original meaning (excellent work) or jokingly in its more common, modern usage (bare minimum). I suspect the former :)
It is not called a Ruler, It is called a Rule.
A Ruler is a King or Queen/Dictator.
A Rule is used for measuring
Thank you so much!
ОтветитьGood idea
ОтветитьI learned from Rob Cosman to use a marking knife. Changed my game completely.
ОтветитьGreat advice. Thank you.
ОтветитьYou are amazing!
ОтветитьI've seen others talk about marking with a knife, but they always said to use a marking knife. I was so glad to see you show the use of a utility knife too! At worst, you'll be off by half the thickness of the blade, which is almost never a problem
ОтветитьDarn, you have a 3' metal ruler? You are the man. Btw, I really love your vids. It's like an apprenticeship, of sorts.
ОтветитьThis guy is good
ОтветитьI can relate to you on memory💯
Ответитьa guy i used to work with was constantly making mistakes, forgetting measures, etc then getting frustrated and making even more mistakes because of it. he refused to make even a simple jig or story stick for anything because that's how he was 'taught' lol. super frustrating. the more you pull a tape or rule out the more you introduce a chance for error.
ОтветитьOnce again, Nick…
Thanks.
They are known as ‘ rods ‘ in the UK
ОтветитьWell made video👍
ОтветитьIf i cannot have straight lines after this, I give up. Now , just need to get my 63yr brain to remember 😂😂 love your channel❤
ОтветитьSome great tips - particularly the parallax one.
I still do the pencil-rolling trick. I thought I'd come up with that myself!
I learned this method 50 years ago and never found anything better. Very well demonstrated.
ОтветитьBrilliant!!!
ОтветитьOutstanding! Thank you!
ОтветитьGreat - again.
ОтветитьAlways clear, concise & so informative. The best woodworking videos available!,
ОтветитьA mechanical pencil lead diameter stays the same throughout its life.
ОтветитьExcellent Video ! Thank you very much
ОтветитьThis qualifies as philanthropy for me, the knowledge you share is priceless, thank you.
ОтветитьMy cabinetry work doesn’t need 1/32 inch accuracy but I almost never use a rule or tape measure. Story sticks, two sicks (inside measurement), and cutoffs for rabitts and dadoes.
ОтветитьWhen I was a kid all I had was a stick.
Ответить90° ruler to the wood. Genius tip Thanks.
ОтветитьThank you!!!
ОтветитьI can see how this works well enough in woodworking, but I've found that it's entirely possible to get complete accuracy with a pencil...I think you deliberately ignored the existence of mechanical pencils, and the fact that 0.3mm will be no wider than your groove darkened with pencil tip. There are plenty of places in woodworking where having little cuts on the surface is a big no no. Oh, and the trick with the grooves works with a small diameter lead, too.
ОтветитьI pay attention to my pencil line and cut on the edge of the line. Put one side of the saw on the edge of the line. Works well.
ОтветитьThat earned a like and a subscribe…and a comment. I think I just found a shop teacher I can actually relate to.
ОтветитьFantastic video! You have included so many skills for the neophyte woodworker. My next project is going to turn out much better because of you. Thanks! P.S.—great dog!
ОтветитьLove the little South Park cameo at the end lol
