Trump proved that he has beaten the flawed American systems better than anyone else all his life. He is still alive and well and was even elected as POTUS. Even after the death of this Trump, there will be other 'Trumps'. America has to change its laws and properly educate its people. Save America.

IF he is convicted of stealing documents relating to national security then he should lose ALL post presidential benefits.
His pension, office and travel expenses and of course his Secret Service protection.

I hear what Benny is sayin, but there's no chance this actually happens. Not having governerment officials watching Trump means he can do whatever he wants in there. Share gov't secrets, for example...to a building full of criminals. Ya'll gotta think this through.

We give secret service protection to former presidents and their families because the likelihood that they would be attacked if not protected is very high. If Trump is in prison this likelihood goes up even higher. Having a dedicated federal agent outside a cell at all times is warranted, and also would still cost significantly less than cost of protection when someone is not in a cell. I could understand stripping him of certain information or financial privileges, but if the former president were to be harmed in prison, either by the prison population or the guards themselves, the damage to the political landscape of this country would be immeasurable. If Trump were to be harmed, claims of political persecution coming from both within the country and from outside it would be extremely difficult to dispute. The country would tear itself apart over an incident that could easily be prevented. This is a clear example of letting our emotions dictate our actions instead of our heads.

Secret Service protection should automatically be reinstated after that person is no longer in custody.
Secret Service protection continues after the presidency so presidents don't need to fear retaliatory attacks after their term.
While incarcerated, you receive protection from the prison guards and prison walls, but outside prison the Secret Service should resume that protection role. That also should apply to transport to and from prison, suspended sentences, and probationary sentences.

Just being convicted shouldn't be a determining factor.

Bennie's solution to the problem of Secret Service Protection for an ex-President is...BRILLIANT !

For years this issue has been an argument against incarcerating an ex-President convicted of a crime. The focus was on the logistics of "securing" the ex-President.

There are secure isolation cells in prisons that endangered prisoners can request.

Prisons are built for "security" and they are arguably the safest place for an ex-president.

Representative Thompson's Bill should be adopted immediately. His arguments are logical, reasonable, affordable, practical, and, most importantly, make "equal treatment under law" a reality.

Convicted criminals DO lose any State or Federal "benefits" whilst incarcerated. Secret Service protection is a "perk" or "benefit" of holding high office. Federal Pensions are benefits as well. The Presidential Pension, lifelong free healthcare, Security Briefings , etc. are all benefits that would cease during incarceration.

There is no reason that Secret Service protection could not be suspended for the term of imprisonment.

Congratulations to Representative Thompson for this reminder that "No one is above the law".

The ONLY person that DOES NOT need to provide a financial statement of affairs before taking office, is the president.
Yet anyone that wants to be a be a congress person must.
This needs to change.
Anyone that wants to run for the highest office in the land, MUST at first ( before nomination ) disclose all financial affairs.

Trump may not be afraid of prison as much as he claims bc he knows his SS Detail will always protect him. I agree-he should not have SS while in prison. That privilege to have a SS Detail should be forfeited as soon as the cell door clangs shut.

I have a better idea how about amending the rules for running for president, set this bar higher to keep the crazies out and people like Trump won't happen again. Raise the bar for even running for congress, again it keep the crazies out so nonsense like these Maga won't happen again. I agree, tho with Bennie Thompson about his proposed law. We need to stop being so weak and allowing these types of people in government and think more of America. Not everyone should qualify to be a president or a member of congress

If a former president decided they didn't want to be in the US any more and so they moved to some other country to live - would the secret service agents go with them? I'm not talking about a vacation, but rather if they have decided they want to live the rest of their life in another country?

This seems like a situation that simply could not work, and it doesn't involve any crimes having been committed. It seems to me that this is the same question as if they went to prison.

The secret service protection is primarily not there to protect Trump. It is there to protect the United States should someone try to do something stupid against Trump that could trigger something similar to World War I breaking out as a result of the assassination of archduke Ferdinand

I thought that SECRET SERVICE IS PRIMARILY PROTECTING THE U.S. from a person with sensative information being forced to give it to our enemies. (Recall how Paedophile Jeffrey Epstein, died in prison while on "sucide watch". A.G. Barr was the last person to see him alive, so far as is known. Epstein was known to have yacht parties and private island parties with Trump, Prince Andrew, Bill Clinton and others. Presumably, he would have COMPROMAT on many of the rich and powerful.)
My guess os that once DT is actually in prison, he will SING for hamburgers!
