Dust storms like the one shown were a contributing factor to the Great Depression, and the main reason why so many highways in the USA have tree lines on either side. The trees help break up the wind, so dry soil (and the seeds therein!) won't get blown away. You may not be able to see the farm land for the trees (which are typically pines or cedars--nice wide base at the bottom), but it beats having another Dust Bowl.

Native Texan here; lived in Wylie. I was a child when a hailstorm hit at the Renaissance Fair. We hunkered down in our van and eventually took a hailstone home in our cooler. It was easily the size of a baseball. Multiple people went to the hospital that day from being struck by massive hailstones. Texas weather does not play!

I live in the area of France formerly called Languedoc, bu now part of a larger region called Occitanie. We are on the same latitude as Rome in Itale. W also get some very unusual meteoroligical events. Over my front door there is a glass canopy - quite small. The glass in the canopy is reinforced by criss-crossing wire in the glass. Two years ago we had hail that was big and heavy enough to break the reinforced glass in the canopy. Here also we are required to use terracota Roman style glass. I also had to hve my roof replaced. Yes. It was of terracotta tiles. My pocket is still feeling the pain, regardless of insurance.
