I use epoxy resin, can this be used as well?
ОтветитьI wonder what you could substitute for the cornstarch, like charcoal...
ОтветитьDid you have a good result pouring resin into the cornstarch mold, did the resin pick up powder from the mold?
Ответитьyou're right the cornstarch works better. I used a lot more dish soap by accident, applying it to the silicone about 5 times and it cured a treat, but not sure why.
I also have experience with the corn starch method, and if you had used 1 quarter of the amount of cornstarch that you used in the video, it would have still cured in about 2 hours and most importantly still been bendable as raw silicone is. Too much cornstarch turns the mold into a fragile Mould. It works great for flat objects but using less cornstarch allows us to make surrounding molds that last and at a fraction of the cost of Smooth-on
its my understanding that you need the silicone to set in 24 hours
ОтветитьI just tried this, struggled and struggled, ,just kept getting sticky, sloppy gloop. I think glycerin is a key ingredient for the process. I was using Fairy dish soap (popular soap in the UK) and discovered that it does not include glycerin in the ingredients. So I tried some liquid hand soap (and lots of it!!) that was nearby, it contains glycerin .... game changer!! Worked a treat. In a short time the silicone had firmed up into a nice putty and didn't stick to my hands. Made fab moulds. So my conclusion, for anyone trying this for the first time, is check the ingredients of your soap and make sure it contains glycerin 😁I
ОтветитьYaaaaaaay for cornstarch. Imma make this :)
ОтветитьHi, i live in a diff country and not sure what type of silicone this is, is it a sealant?
ОтветитьI think the process is kind of the all the way around. Add the silicon amount you will need then add either the soap or the corn starch then you can control the process better.
ОтветитьI've heard resin won't cure with this type of mold. Can anyone say if this works with resin or not for sure? Thanks.
ОтветитьCan this mould sustain high temperatures like that of molten lead? I want to make one for diving weights. Will this work for it ?
ОтветитьI was thinking about trying to make some impressions of leaves ..any ideas which would be the better mold for this ? the leaves are very thin like maple leaves ..
im trying to get the e epoxy as thin as the leaves are or close ab possible.
Or just pour the entire tube of direct silicone and smooth it with your gloved hands over the piece you wish to mould and leave overnight ..
Might need more than one tube if it's a large area to do.. x
Wayyyy too much soap, as you already know. One more tip is once it’s ready, don’t just glop it on. Work with small amounts, pat it onto an area of your piece, repeat until entire area is covered. No chance of bubbles, and as long as you work smoothly, leaving the bulk of your silicone in the soapy water (2 TBSP of dawn/cup H2O is all you need 😉), you’ll get a really good reusable mould. ALWAYS use a mould release of some type. Believe it or not, I’ve used Pam cooking spray in a pinch & it works great!
The two part 1:1 pourable silicone kits are terrific, but very $$$. This is a much cheaper way of DIY ❤️
I tried both it was really messy it was really hard to wash it off my hands what did you wash your hands with cuz I couldn't take it off took me to days.
ОтветитьThe white 100% silicone caulking works better than clear
ОтветитьAkril silikon is good?
ОтветитьNice video
ОтветитьNice vid. Thank you
Ответитьfirst of all what mold release did you apply ? oil or something with your fingers ?
ОтветитьCornstarch works great! However it does leave a matte, cloudy finish to the resin piece. I'm back to square one trying to find a method for a smooth, clear finish on my resin. Thank you for sharing!
ОтветитьI even ruined a bought silicone mold with the soap mold because they where sitting next to each other and the not curing mold made the bought one all bubbley
ОтветитьThe dry ingredient is gonna cure faster than the wet so u cant give both the same amount of time
Ответитьless soap, more kneading time..you want to knead it until you can feel it start to firm, it cures in 15 minutes when done properly
ОтветитьWARM!!! WARM WATER!! NOT COLD. Waaayy deeper pot. You have to do it under water so no air gets it till the end and more dish soap
ОтветитьI just started this whole mold crafting thing , and i find it pretty expensive to keep buying liquid silicone or even silicone molds , so i watched a bunch of video's like this one on how to save money and make your own silicone molds by using cornstarch or dish washing liquid , i found the cornstarch method to work better for me , it really works . But i discovered that my first project when my mold came out i had this white residue stuck to my project it appeared to be cornstarch resin so the next try i cleaned the mold really good inside with soap and all and the same thing happened again , maybe it's because i'm doing epoxy resin in this type of homemade mold or maybe i need to try the dish washing soap method not sure , the way i fixed the problem i sanded down the project but it lost some of the design and it is no longer clear due to having to sand it , it was either that or waste my project and resin .
ОтветитьPlease can i this method to make any 3d mold?
ОтветитьIs this really a thing?
ОтветитьI tried the soap one and it was really gooy, I’m still waiting for it to set
ОтветитьI have the same problem with the soup and water,I leave over night and nothing.i will try the cornstarch. Can I use regular flour?
ОтветитьYou used A LOT of soap, is not necessary to use that much, just a spoon and then knead it under water until you feel it starts to harden.
ОтветитьYou used to much soap. I did some molds wih silicone and only used the soapery water to keep the siilicone from clumping too much and easy to work into the shape I want.
But I think it was a good idea to soap the object before using the silicone. It must help release it. Some of mine were stuck and left with silicone on...
What Kine of silicon did you use? When I tried it with normal building silicone, it goes into billion pieces that will not stick to one lump. And it’s absorbed all the water.
Ответитьhello what's your business contact way?
ОтветитьHello, have you ever tried using the silicone straight from the tube onto a form?
ОтветитьHow could you do this for a sphere or a glass ball?
ОтветитьWhat are you using molud release?
ОтветитьI think you used way too much soap, I have only made a few but never had a problem.
ОтветитьI have only done the dish soap way, I only use lukewarm water and soap (never cold water) and I have never had the silicone not set up. I also mix it in the soapy water for 3-5 minutes. I have noticed imperfections within the silicone due to the water being trapped in between the silicone and the object you are casting, so I am going to try the cornstarch method!
For your cornstarch method, did you find the mold was exactly smooth like the piece you made the mold out of?
Have you tried it with resin?
ОтветитьWas your silicone a 100% silicone?
ОтветитьI had to use to dish soap method in college....hated it. Ours set up, i dont think you had the right like ratio amount....i don't remember how it was meant to turn out. I never touched that method again after that class. But i might have to try the cornstarch one, never heard of it.
Ответитьmakes me want to play with corn starch!
