I´m really not good in orbital mecanics, but wouldn´t the speed of the asteroid be relevant to the destruction it can cause? E = 1/2 m * v^2 would suggest that the speed has much more relevance. And I assume that not every interstellar object has the same speed, when colliding with the earth...
