This is just a reupload of the 3 part fuel injection series from last year, consolidated into a single video.

There is at least one last step left: active pre-chambers where a rich mix is ignited in a partially isolated cavity, then the flame jet coming out of it gets used to thoroughly mix and ignite the lean cylinder charge.

1996! Incredible. I felt like we've had Direct EFI since the 80s but of course. This was well done and informative. Thanks.

Alfa Romeo used a SPICA four piston mechanical fuel pumps on their 2 liters and smaller spiders they were used on other models of Alfa other than the spiders but was swapped out to Bosch electronic injection in the very early 80's. It had fuel enrichment when cold. Run-on cutoff, altitude compensator and a few other things but people wouldn't leave well enough alone and tried to tweek the pumps and make thing worse then pull the SPICA system off and switch to 2 two barrel Webber carburetors. SPICA as far as I know started making pumps for tractors.

History and development
The carburetor was invented by Karl Benz in 1885 and patented in 1886. It was apparently also invented by the Hungarian engineers Janos Csonka and Donát Bánki in 1893. Frederick William Lanchester of Birmingham, England experimented early on with the wick carburetor in cars.

It is ALL about finest-possible distribution of fuel droplets (microdroplets) in the cylinder chamber. With Diesel fuel especially because it is so much thicker than gasoline. And this works only in a highly sophisticated way: By highest possible pressure sitting at a nozzle exit. Utrahighpressure pump, into a steel rail (a tubular steel reservoir device with exits). Where the injectors are connected to. For Diesel (Gasoil) we have to inject at the right time. As there is no spark plug, it has to ignite by itself.

Carburettors do not vapourise fuel. They atomise the fuel.
Big difference.
If vapourisation was required then the simplest way would be to just heat the fuel.

Although your video is educational…. You seem to leave out a true and important part of the fuel injection… and that’s the fact that it was invented by a Mexican… somehow for some reason all the inventions seems to be by whites….. history should be rewritten and give credit to the true inventors!!!!! Thats just my opinion.

Having worked for AlliedSignal/Bendix and Bosch it was very heart warming to see that you got the history of Electronic FI correct down to Bosch Licensing the Bendix technology.
It is well documented that the original Bendix unit rebuilt with quality capacitors to original operate the hemi-powered DeSoto flawlessly.

Antilock history mechanical and electronic charts the same way with the Bendix-Chrysler being first followed by Bosch.
This History is a great demonstration of the innovator's dilemma and how sometimes being second is more beneficial.

If I ran an automaker back in the 1970s with fuel injection similar to the Bendix electrojet but with better quality components and DOHC with a heated wire MAF sensor. Like a Chevy Vega-sized entry luxury car with a 165 hp 2.4L DOHC V6 engine that has a 6300 rpm redline as well as a leather interior with wood trim and front ventilated and solid rear disc brakes instead of rear drums. Also instead of a warning buzzer when warning sounds become mandatory, use an electronic bell chime to make the vehicle appear more futuristic.

electric cars can't replace the combustion engine because the fact is they are awful and un sustainable which is where synthetic fuels come into play that could save the combustion engine and be much quicker and easier than replacing all combustion engine cars

Excellent video.

I own a diesel that uses piezoelectric injectors driven by a Bosch made ecu. It is the diesel variant and eventuality of all the developments added to GDI systems. It had to address the higher fuel pressures of diesel as well as diesel emissions criteria.

This TDI system was developed during the time of the EU diesel marketing push. Development has been slow recently as a result of dieselgate and may never recover.

My sensation is that modern direct injected gasoline is very equivalent to modern this modern diesel from an efficiency standpoint, even with the higher energy density of diesel, due to emission standard and how the systems perform in an ordinary household use case. The need to top up exhaust fluid and use a fuel additive makes running diesel a bit more maintenance too.

If the internal combustion engine is to survive the manufacturer must make the engine give the consumer super high mileage, 80 to 100 MPG. This was proven in the early 90s and kicked GM BUTT on a test track. GM just bought the other company out right. Otherwise they all are dummed. GM just SUCKS. PERIOD !!!!!!!!!

It's a good thing that cars Are more efficient all the regulations just make the cars more complex more expensive And when something breaks you gotta spend more point there has to be a trade off an electric vehicle's pollute just as much as a gasoline vehicle
