Hello Father fish, love youre methods. Been subscribed for a few months. Im slowly adapting most of my tanks to the deeper sand beds with dirted bottoms, Ive mostly used pool filter sand and hardware store top soil so my question is, what kind of potting or top soils and what other sands are suitable for this natural style?

I have some buckets of rain water in garden, teeming with all sorts of bugs worms lava swimming around. Would that be good to use as the water in the tank? Algae in bottom but water is very clear, already a fish tank! Last time i had fish was 50 years ago, garden pond.

Hello, so I was setting up a very small 1.5 gallon tank for my son with some goldfish he won at a carnival. I added the 1in of putting soil and 2 in. of sand I acquired from the beach. My water is very cloudy at this point, so I’m not going to add the plants in yet along with the filter but I was wondering why the water got so cloudy? I did pour the water in slowly into a cup and let it overflow onto the sand as you did in the video.

I have a few questions. 1) Are there any restrictions on the minimum volume of the aquarium in which a balance can be established when using such a soil? For example, if I take an aquarium of 20 liters and make a soil as in the video, will such an aquarium be able to exist effectively? 2) It is almost impossible to buy products in our country that are not infected with red algae. Will red algae grow strongly with such soil? Do you have some secret for fighting red algae or are you just avoiding infection? 3) It's hard for me to make out by ear what exactly you are adding. I've been keeping fish off and on sinceI was a kid (about 20 years now). My mother used to keep fancy goldfish, my brother has a 300 gal saltwater tank, and I have always loved keeping small freshwater tanks.

I currently have a 5 gallon betta tank with a terrible bacterial bloom. I've gotten rid of it once already but it came back!
I'm getting ready to start up a 10 gallon to replace it and when I i found your channel.
I love bioactive set ups. We have a bioactive leopard gecko tank and a bioactive Pacman frog tank.

I always opted for planted tanks with driftwood for my freshwater tanks as well. But I have never used dirt or sand. I typically use plant substrate with gravel on top.

Anyway, my questions are what kind of potting soil and peat moss and the like do you use? I noticed there was obviously no perlite or vermiculite. Is it important to use organic?
I just don't want to go to Lowe's and buy any old potting soil or peat moss and call it a day.

And do you need to rinse the sand first?

You can cut some cardboard to make a form to keep the soil mix/sand seperate while you slowly pour them in. Easy way to keep the dirt off the glass.

I started 30 cube with your instruction (I replaced fungus part with local dead leaves on stream and other organic remains) and it's working really well so far. Although, it left me with one question that probably you've already answered... but why do I have to set up mud below sands? Is this step can be skipped or it's absolute necessity?

I live in palestine occupied territory, in Gaza seiege, here we dont have any river, just amideterion sea. I dont know from where i can get mud, plants, and other mother nature components!

So you were just giving us a quick instructional on adding the dirt? A layer of mud should be created before the sand? Just found you and I've been watching hours of videos. This is the first discrepancy that I've found.

What are those all soil you put?

A dirted planted tank only way to go ..it’s more fun with plants and natural ..this is only way I set up my tanks now ..✌🏻

I'm following your method, I start a dirt tank, now I'm waiting for the results, fish look happy, plants start to grow,
I only have issues with pH too high, around 8, now the question is how to reduce the pH naturally? I will start adding some leaves but the tank in 190 gallon plus a sump filter
