Took me way longer than it should have to find this video years later. Excellent work on this one, very helpful. Adding to filmmaking playlist!

Really loved the knife that wasn’t bloody after the guy stabbed Cook. Proper continuity right there

Talking about how long ago 2011 was, and then I see this video was released over 4 years ago. I guess we have two very different opinions on what constitutes “a long time ago”.
Great breakdown though. Loved the commentary you were able to provide, a lot of good insight.

"Moonlight is blue"

Not actually... it's reflected daylight.

I know you kept thinking you werw straying from cinematography and going more towards review and theory but this was a very clever and intelligent take on this film. You should do more reviews like this!

Hey man, can you do a video on a Kannada film 'ulidavaru kandante', why I am telling you this cause, many kannada film didn't had a standard cinematography or no cinematography at all. But this film changed everything. It came with awesome cinematography (not standard as a Hollywood movies), lots of experiment done in this movie. The awesome thing is that cinematography and music held the core emotions of this movie.

"The Grifters" is an excellent film.  Came out in the early '90's and was directed by Stephen Frears.

I think for the night driving shots maybe Zeiss MP lenses were used. Much of the movie was probably the Angeniuex zoom. Much of the daytime non-action stuff has the look of diffusion but thought it was interesting that for the river scene they went full on with heavy highlight blooming and also diverged from the general look of the film and either used heavy warming filters (81EF, 85, or outright brown) or maybe production or post production color manipulation.

The China Restaurant at the end is all orange, except for the bad guy who is blue. Creates a strong impression that this encounter is going to go very well.

Great work Matt!! I hated film theory when I was getting my degree. Now, I can't get enough. For any new and developing filmmakers out there, the technical aspects of filmmaking are often straight forward, more easily measured, learned, and made tangible. This makes a cinematographer, with only technical skills, replaceable. In my humble opinion, Cinematographers that have a greater understanding of story, strong thoughts on visual motifs and human behavior offer more value to a production. They bring that next level of artistry to the craft.

Interesting theory about the color pallets, however, I really feel like the director and DP were just in live with the orange teal color pallet, which I think was widely popular during that time and still kind of is. But that's just my opinion.

I think they have been put in the middle of frame in order to highlight the negative space that both of them have behind. It means they are now alone, the bad guy has no allies anymore, and Ryan has no girl anymore. They are ready to give it all up.
The frames are also dirty so that we feel both of their presence in all shot/reverse, meaning there's no escape now.

Would you be so kind to tell me the name of the program you use to track down the colours from the scenes? Like when you press on a certain place where there is a color you wanna highlight and then it allows you paint that color.
