A funny thing I noticed during my first playthrough is that you can very easily accidentally skip ever speaking to Akande. Seriously, when I got to the final fight I had no idea who she was because I had somehow never interacted with her in any way

I liked the aesthetic, kind of, and I liked the odd manner in which people greeted you with company slogans, but this game was ultimately another member of the RPG Dark Age.

I know it has it's flaws but I loved Outer Worlds. It was the first game I beat after getting sober, no other game made me want to actually play for like three years, and because of that it will always have a place in my heart.

"the americans are the romans and the halcyons are the byzantines"....da fuq? the byzantines are what we wrongly characterize them as. the byzantines thought of themselves as romans and they were. the western roman empire was withered by germanic and frankish tribes, specifically alarics final sack of rome which he would enjoy for 3 months before dying and being dumped in a river, while the eastern roman empire soldiered onward.the eastern portion of the roman empire was actually the wealthiest portion of the empire the first triumvirate and second triumvirate came about only because the portions of the empire had equal values, the western portion was where the political power was and the eastern portion was where all the wealth was.

Outer Worlds is the only RPG game that I've ever played and disliked enough that I had to force myself to keep going when I wanted to stop halfway through.

And then I realized that "Halfway through" was actually almost the end of the game because it just falls flat on its face right after you arrive in Byzantium. I was expecting like another 15 hours of game because it felt like it was just getting started and then it just. Ends.

It was not good.

The fertilizer plotpoint is hilariously revealing about the writers and the writing. Any true nerd, sooner or later comes across the wonderful topic of plants and gardening.
1., Because plants are actually interesting, and watching stuff grow from seeds that you plant is rather exciting.
2., It's fundamental WW1 and WW2 technology.

Modern chemical fertilizer can be traced back to Fritz Haber and Carl Bosch in the early 1900s'.
The main goal of the process was to somehow fix nitrogen in concentrated forms that were greater then it was naturally available. This came in the form of ammonia, which as it turns out, explodes pretty good too. This is why peacetime industrial agriculture can be switched out for war-eceonomy bomb production with 0 effort, and back when the conflict is over. This was the main driving force behind cheap food in America, and heavily subsidized agriculture after WW2. The government had to get rid of all that military surplus, so they funneled it into your BigMac's. The more you know.

Oh and Haber developed a very rudimentary nervegas for pest control, since inscets started to swarm all the suddenly abundant crop fiields. And since he envisoned it as the mighty storm of science sweeping away the hardships that plagued agricultural humanity for millenia, he named the gas Cyclone, AKA Zyklon in german. To kill pests. Naturally the military had their own definitions of "pest".

But all this info, now in 2024, is literal ancient history. Both fertilizers and pest-control has been heavily developed since, and is hotly researched field in organic chemistry. If push comes to shove, we can cook up stuff in a lab, purely from inorganic compounds to keep stufff alive. We can even synthesize baby formula that actually doesn't kill the baby anymore. Sure it's very rough on the infant, but it can survive.

So the fact that writers decided that the futuristic space people can only make fertilizer from dead people as opposed to using the tech WE ALREADY HAVE IN OUR OWN WORLD AS OF 2024, speaks volumes of their ignorance or at the very least dis-intrest in science and the story and histroy of scince.

Also, what happened to composting? And proper soil science? While humans do rot away real neat when they die, they don't automatically turn to plant chow without a whole host of bacteria, fungi, worms and insects to help both our bodies and dead plant matter along the way. Hell, tha majority of the soil IS dead plant matter, and only a very small portion of it has the hard and lumpy bits of tigers and monkeys that had an unfortunate run-in in primordial jungles of old.

tl;dr The writers are South-African-junta-tier who after being asked where their food will come from if they kill all the farmers, promptly answered: the supermarket.

"Secret police, purging, and mass starvation" aren't defining features of communism. Starvation is a potential consequence of any poor economy, centrally planned or not. Likewise, secret police are a tool used by any authoritative government, so they're more likely to show up under fascism or communism.

Didn't you also recently call the NCR communist?

To be clear, this game fumbles its political messaging, I'd just prefer its critics didn't as well.

Another stupid thing, is "the food barely has nutrition".. ok... why? how? the soil seems pretty rich, and big animals can sustain themselves.

solving this trough agriculture, or you know making synthetic vitamins seems 1000000000 times easier than, trying to alter human genes, FOR LACK OF NUTRITION.

if it was radiation, it would maybe make a bit more sense, basically people are dying from accelerated cancers, so we are trying to cure cancer.

but lack of nutrition?

I wouldn't necessarily say this game was supposed to overtake Bethesda or the other RPGs at the time. I recall very specifically when Outer Worlds was unveiled, that the presenter was telling us not to set our expectations too high - as if new vegas was a bar they knew they couldn't cross. That underwhelmed me enough to get what I expected.

Ah, Peril in Gorgon. Where we are in complete agreement. I, too, was astounded by the jump in quality and tonal improvement within it.

And I spread the word far and wide, that if the main game was this well written, far more people would praise the game.

The board's scientists being ignorant is because they kept in the dark of the major issue they are helping solve. Censorship and propaganda is rampant throughout Halcyon, few, very few people are aware of their impending disaster.

Intentionally.

Ответить
@Duchess_Van_Hoof
@Duchess_Van_Hoof - 19.02.2024 12:27

Regarding the food issue, I never noticed any plot holes. They have food stockpiles they imported previously, and complement that with local sources which are unhealthy and insufficient.

As Halcyon is collapsing, their ships literally fall from the sky and facilities decay, they do not have the means to trade with other systems. Earth going dark suggests that all of humanity is collapsing around them, and information quarantines have kept people from realizing it.

They are running out of supplies, and their agricultural plans are collapsing before their eyes. It is what killed the Hope's crew.

As for Edgewater, they are filling the cans with sprats, as their shipments of Saltuna has ceased completely. Spacer's Choice are cutting them off, and they subsist on literal space rats. The Board questline to eradicate Edgewater is just the next step in what already happens to them.

So... what is the narrative issue?

The trailer for Outer Worlds kinda hyped me back in the day. Mostly because I was a big Obsidian shill, true, but still I felt like it could have been something cool. The trailer for Outer Worlds 2 is fucking horrible, I'm not exaggerating when I say it's probably the worst game trailer I've seen in the last decade. It's meaningless, cringe, idiotic and deeply, deeply rarted. This trailer is a crack baby with fetal alcohol syndrome. It's shit. I hate it. I hope to God it's a case of the marketing team fucking up but I remember Tim Cain saying the marketing team they're using is great at understanding the developers' vision. Are they the same team? In that case I'm assuming the developers have been recently traumatized by some terrible event in their lives. I hate it so much. Who would ever greenlight that piece of shit? It offends all senses at once. Every time you show a clip of it I feel like I'm about to throw an autistic tantrum.

I had so much hype for this game and now that I've finished it, I feel like it was a total waste of time.
Was pretty much a chore from beginning to end, and the ending is just very low effort. I even played the board ending, hoping It would somehow be more interesting, and it's the same fucking ending. Wiping out Edgewater was so underwhelming. Having nuked Megaton in Fallout 3 years ago, I expected something similar. The writing and especially atmosphere is nothing like fallout games, it just pales in comparison.

Wait a minute, you aren’t forced to wipe out Edge Water. You are only forced to do that section of the quest if you didn’t sure up the colony during the intro. Meaning if you were rping as a corpo fixer you could save everyone there. This is something you can look up, it’s a whole ass ending slide.
