Pinned post for Q&A :)
ОтветитьMan, post-refit California was a shockingly attractive ship. I love how smoothly her height builds and then decreases from bow to stern, and the summetrical superfiring turret pairs.
ОтветитьTo think whilst they were doing this, they were also developing the B29, the Norden bomb sight and the Atom bomb. One of my favourite stories is what happened when the Tennessee turned up at Tarawa after her return ro service
ОтветитьAfter the pearl harbor attack why didn't they bring up the Arizona and repair her after they had all the other battle ships repaired enough to sail to Puget sound for refit. Yes I'm aware of all the lives lost on the Arizona but they would have been better to be laid to rest. Now she's an environmental problem leaking oil still .
ОтветитьAS I recall "Nevada" is Spanish for "snow covered"
ОтветитьSome of those ol' girls covered with new 40 mm quads look like drift logs covered with barnacles! Thanks, good to know how busy the yards were during the war.
Ответитьyes, I'd like to hear the stories of Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and Maryland.
ОтветитьSUCH A SARCASTIC ANNOYING VOICE I SUGGEST A COMPUTER GENERATED ONE OTHERWISE VERY FACTUAL NOT MUCH IN THE WAY OF VISUAL THOUGH THANK U
ОтветитьHow the heck (and when and where) do they build a floating drydock that can lift a 30,000 ton battleship clear of the water?
ОтветитьWonderful video of three VERY Classy Ladies!
Thank you!
Please do another , would love to see Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Tennessee. Loved this 1 , another great video of the "standards".
ОтветитьI watched it. Found it more cursory than in depth. Interested in smaller vessels not just capitol ships.
ОтветитьI've realized that I'm far more interested in the histories of the ships themselves, and the men who served on them, than I am in the history of wars in general. This subject was on my to-research list, it was a treat to find this video! Please do make a follow-up video about the other salvaged ships!
ОтветитьGenuinely fascinating how they didn’t realize surviving Pearl Harbor and two nukes meant that as a gunnery target it was going to take quite a lot to take her down.
ОтветитьI own a piece of deck planking from USS Indiana
ОтветитьCurious, what happened to the Pearl Harbor crew of the Nevada? Did it get reassigned crew or did the old crew stay with her during the refit?
ОтветитьThe mast of the USS West Virginia stands as sentinel over the downtown Campus of West Virginia University since May, 1963.
Ответить"Nevahda, Nevad-a, Nevayda, apparently these are all valid in the US?" [sound of angry Nevadans stampeding to keyboards]
ОтветитьThis channel is simply excellent. It belongs in my subscription list.
ОтветитьThe Nevada refit, as it went on:
"Nah, that's still not enough pewpew on the anti-aircraft guns"
Upon visiting Arlington I thought the USS Maine memorial striking and well done, but thought the US should have done something similar for the losses at Pearl Harbour.
ОтветитьOne of the great ironies of WWII. The Old Ladies of Pearl Harbor—with new fire control—dial in the Japanese at Surigao Strait and exact a terrible revenge with massive and accurate 16” and 14” gunfire. Along with the destroyers and cruisers, it was a massacre.of retribution.
ОтветитьDrachi, your narrative style, not to mention the wealth of information is simply priceless! I thoroughly enjoy every second of your documentaries!
ОтветитьLove your style of commenting, let´s hear what others damaged ships managed to accomplished! :)
ОтветитьIncredible historical knowledge that is even more entertaining w/the matter of fact British narration as an American, can't help but feel affinity for Britannia.
ОтветитьWith Nevada... if they hadn't found the wreck, I'm not sure I'd believe that they actually managed to sink her.
"Sunk" at Pearl Harbor - wait, nope, beached and avoided sinking. Still above water
Nuked - Still above water
Nuked again - Still above water
Used as gunnery practice by her 5x Great-granddaughers... still above water.
it just occurred to me that this makes Nevada, California, and West Virginia the world's largest non-nuclear submarines by technicality
Ответитьne vay da never heard that one.
ОтветитьFtaod, yes. We want to hear about all the ships.
ОтветитьGreat and very interesting follow up to the Salvage of Pearl Harbor series Drach! Well done sir, thank you. Oh and Yes please do a video on the damaged ships
ОтветитьYou definitely honor our veterans with your contributions on preserving our history thank you
ОтветитьLol, Nevada looked like they had a couple of oil rigs on top of her. Weird looking superstructure to say the least.
ОтветитьI know you did a dry dock set of videos but I would be very interested in seeing an in depth survey of the actual salvage operations after December 7th. Might be interesting as well to do a survey of immediate salvage and repair of all vessels in the Pacific Theater. I know they were done under challenging conditions with minimal equipment in all sorts of weather.
ОтветитьI appreciate Drachinifel;s work, I really do.
The point bears making that at the time of the Pearl Harbor attack, Utah was no longer carried as a battleship on the Navy rolls. In 1931 it was largely demilitarized, designated AD16, and equipped with a lot of anti-aircraft weapons for use training gun crews. Yes, Utah was there. No, she wasn't a battleship anymore.
Who told you that those three ways of pronouncing ‘Nevada’ were “valid”? Was it a Scotsman?
ОтветитьNevada pronounced with a long "a" is not a legitimate pronunciation anywhere. You might hear it from someone who imagines they are being humourous and possibly "humouressly" dismissive of the state. The two common pronunciations use either the "a" from "flat," or the "ah" as in "father" typical of proper Spanish pronunciation.
ОтветитьThoroughly enjoy your detailed presentations.
I have never heard Nevada pronounced with a long "A", or any other way than NE-V-AHH-DAHH. AH as in amused/
Nevada, Pennsylvania, California ,
Tennessee and West Virginia 41vision and 1944 vision
looks like two different ships , Unbelieveable
I really like the look of the old standard battleships, don't get me wrong, the iowas are drop dead gorgeous but these old ships have the "old warship charm" imo
ОтветитьThe Japanese never attacked Pearl Harbor.
ОтветитьSad they used those beautiful ships as target practice.
ОтветитьNe-VAD-uh (The State) the Spanish word it comes from is said differently.
ОтветитьReally like the way you present this is very entertaining and informative
ОтветитьThank you. A most enjoyable 42 minutes.
ОтветитьScreaming in Anime: "Nani?!? Those ships were destroooooyed!"
ОтветитьYes, please, would like to hear about the other 3.
ОтветитьDo you have a video on the dry dock ship Artisan? I just learned about this thing and it is blowing my mind and I wonder if there are any other comparable ships in other navies
ОтветитьNevayda is never, under any circumstance, an acceptable pronunciation 😂😂
