seems that a series of voltage regulators would reduce the heat buildup.

Hey I was concerned I make lm 317 adjustable voltage regulator but it cannot power a load. Even small load. Although I can adjust the output voltage but It doesn't even make the load function. What is the trouble? Sorry for my english

I am having a serious problem with my LM317T. Even with 6 volts difference, it refuses to output more than 170ma of current! It is supposed to easily handle more than an amp! I am even using as large heat sink, and the LM317t is not even getting warm. What could be the problem?

How do you determine that you need those capacitances? Nobody ever explains this 😏

Awesome. I need to step down the viltage (5v to 3.3v) coming from a development board into a wii chuck and I just happen to have one of these ICs lying around.

I transposed the formula to find R2 not R1. Datasheet and other places show that R1 is 240 ohms. And reference is 1.25. So I let R1 be constant and calculate for R2. I ignored the 50 u * R2 since that is minuscule.

This is a very informative video Sir! However, I am building this as a 24 Volt power supply on a breadboard with a 2 watt load resistor at the end of the circuit in order to simulate a load of about 250mA constant current draw. Given Ohm's law this resistor needed to be 2 Watts in order to handle the current, but what about resistor's R1 and R2 that are connected to the regulator? Can I use 1/4 watt resistors there? Or do they need to be 2 watts as well, considering my circuit draws 250mA?

If you replace the potentiometer with a thermistor, then you will have a temperature controlled fan power supply!

What are the components of a cigarette lighter plug USB out phone charger? Pre-made to take 12v and reduce it to 5v, usually 1A, 2.1A and 2.4A outputs. Is there a simple schematic for this? It seems easier to just gut one of those apart and repurpose it in a different project.

Success! (thanks); used LM338T(5A): R1 = 560Ω/4W(J) = R2=10K Pot... ca. 1 -11V from 12V SMPS... recommended wattage(range) for R1?? (FWIW, tantalum caps)

I just dont get these things. Trying to drive an LED neither the lm317 or the l78s werer able to deliver more than 200mA. If under load they imediadly drop in voltage. Seems like they are somehow regulating the current but how and whyyy

I’m a bit confused, is the Input-output differential just simply your input voltage minus your output voltage? And that determines the drop out voltage?

It is not clear to me: what is in front of what, exactly. If current flows from the + terminal of a battery, for example, what does that connect to first: the potentiometer, or the voltage regulator?

So... This isn’t too far off if the LM317 gets up to 55° (including the heat sink!) after a few minutes when used from a 12v source for a 5v, 0.6A power supply (see video in my channel). 🤔 Wonder how to get around it. Two in parallel?
