It’s crazy to think, as a younger guy I used to find BB King boring because I was into nothing but heavy metal. As a slightly older guy now, I still am into heavy metal but have come to appreciate how fucking good and straight from the soul BB Kings music is.

I seriously don't understand what is this big hype around BB King. He did not play anything else in his whole life then a minor pentatonic scale. Maximum blues scale!I personally think that he was an honest and dedicated guitarist but extremely simple player. Personally I can not listen to his playing because it is really that awkward. Very boring, very simple and beginner tasty. There is a blues soul in his playing but common...King of blues? Good blues guitarist? :))) Let me just not start to list who is/was a great blues guitarist...
His name is already super awkward. It always makes me smile. Who gives a name like this to himself? :) OMG! :(
Seriously....After half a year of playing everyone can play a blues solo like him! Everyone! Or compose songs with 3 chords or on a 12 bar blues...etc..I'm serious! You can argue with me but just show me one (only one!) song or solo where he plays anything else than a damn minor pentatonic... Always repeating the same licks again and again... :(

He talks a lot and sings a lot for a guitar player. The gifted guitar player kids don't talk at all. It's like waynes world the drummer. They just want to play. It's a personality where they are more interested in art and making things than playing guitar. They said Jimi Hendrix was shy. I don't imagine that Jeff Beck talked a lot. I don't remember jimmy page saying much in the song remains the same. they're drummer john bonham was messing with cars in his free time. He was just doing noise stuff the whole time in the song remains the same. It's funny because he had to tell the audience a story about him not talking. he said "hey guys. I had to listen to music and not talk to people learn the music and prepare for the show." why don't you shut up now?

That's also something that I heard a really gifted guitar player say constantly. he would just say "shut up and play. just shut and play." I think that's why they learned how to write music. they had a hard time hearing someone yelling what notes to play while they were playing.

John’s energy is really interesting here. He’s so young, and head’s full of steam. He’s got his strat singing like one of his heroes, 5 feet from him.

BB checks him, and John laughs and jumps, leans toward him, but ol’ BB keeps it friendly but not quite funny.

Less geeking, more playing young fella. Check John’s face. The laugh vanishes. The camera angle jumps to shield him. And then… magic. Why? Because John immediately reads the moment, hears what BB’s saying, rises all the way up to the occasion, RIPS the opening vocal runs on Sweet Little Angel. Legendary in his own right.

I've always thought that although he respected him as an artist, BB King didn't like John much. I mean his personality, not necessarily his playing. Watching Mr. Kings body language here, I think he would've much rather been somewhere else. There are other instances as well, just search for them together and it's the same thing. I don't think BB ever really gave John the affirmation that John wanted. The truth of it is that Mr. Mayer is one of the best guitar players alive today. Eric Clapton called him a "master" guitar player. His thumb literally sits ready anywhere on the neck. Most people don't have hands quite that big.

What a conversation, that was JM asking BB for his blessing to master the blues… “Do I have It? Is my heart in there? Is my love and pain in there? Have I worked hard enough to share this stage with you sir?”
