ОтветитьFuck... just what I need.
ОтветитьOh my god, I am such a sucker for a deep voice; this was gorgeous. Was already familiar with the Tennessee Ernie Ford version, but did not actually know the title was '16 Tons', so glad to find that out. My dad was born in a company town belonging to a coal mine in Ohio; his dad and uncle and grandpa all worked in the mine, until his uncle decided to try his luck in Detroit back in the day when the auto industry was booming and he had no trouble getting a job with one of the big car companies and urged his brother to come up and join him and get out from under the risk of developing miner's lung, which I guess was fairly common. So my grandpa moved his family up to Detroit when my dad was about...ten maybe? It wasn't a bad life for a kid at least living in a company town; my dad has fond memories of getting milk fresh from the cow and chickens fresh from his grandma's yard, and acres full of berry bushes free for the picking.
ОтветитьTennessee Ernie Ford would be proud, amazing rendition

ОтветитьSome people say a man is made outta' mud
A poor man's made outta' muscle and blood
A muscle and blood, skin and bones
A mind that's a-weak and a back that's strong
You load sixteen tons and what do ya get?
Another day older and deeper in debt
Saint Peter don't you call me 'cause I can't go
I owe my soul to the company store
I was born one mornin' when the sun didn't shine
I picked up a shovel and walked to the mine
I loaded sixteen tons of number 9 coal
And the straw boss said, "Well, a-bless my soul"
You load sixteen tons and what do ya get?
Another day older and deeper in debt
Saint Peter don't you call me 'cause I can't go
I owe my soul to the company store
If you see me comin', better step aside
A lotta men didn't and a lotta men died
One fist of iron, the other of steel
If the right one don't getcha, then the left one will
Sixteen tons and what do ya get?
Another day older and deeper in debt
Saint Peter don't you call me 'cause I can't go
I owe my soul to the company store
I was born one mornin' and it was drizzlin' rain
Fightin' and trouble are my middle name
I was raised in a canebrake by an ol' mama lion
Can't no high-toned woman make me walk the line.
You load sixteen tons and what do ya get?
Another day older and deeper in debt
Saint Peter don't you call me 'cause I can't go
I owe my soul to the company store
