You never know when your appreciation is going to make someone confident or overconfident

I would say that if there are high expectations, people usually fail because either they can't handle the pressure or they do their best but still don't meet the expectations. They don't perform well like this video suggests.
However, when somebody is coached well, they can flourish. That much I agree with.

This doesn't consider innate differences between people. People naturally have different personalities and skills which could play a role in all of this. Also, for certain personalities, being put down and not noticed may galvanize that individual to work harder. These personalities types may be a minority, but this is still something to consider.

there is a way to fight this back. listen to what you hear from others, make sure its true somehow while keeping your ways towards the person/subject same. be ready for both truth and lie about what you heard. i do that all the time, always works
