One day people will understand what an absolute beast of a synth this really is :) Glad to have one, and it plays really nice with the P6 as well! Each has it's own strong suits.. the Rev 2 can sound fizzy and glittery, while the P6 just sounds.. juicy, warm and alive! I guess you really need both! And a big wallet :)

5 years on and this has been the most capable Synthesizer I’ve had the privilege of owning. Can handle anything I throw at it. Never disappoints and always deliverers. Outstanding synth and worth the commitment.

What synth in the Dave Smith product line would be best for 80s 90s new wave music? I am playing in a 1980s new wave tribute band and need a synth for that but there are so many different Prophet models that I am confused what ones would be best for playing songs by the Cure, New Order, Duran Duran and Depeche Mode.

Every analog I use produces this hi fi crackle/ humming type sound over top of the sound being played... is that an analog thing or is there a way around that?

If you don’t know. No worries

I’ve been told by my local dealer that the Rev 2 isn’t very reliable, and when it does break (within warranty),DSI seem to think you should get your tools out and fix it yourself. Come on if DSI are supposed to be the equivalent of a Rolls Royce, could you imagine them saying that to you. Which is a shame cause I went to the shop to buy one and came out with something else. 😫😫

The only bad thing about this Keyboard is the Manual and lack of support
showing you how to use it and get the most out of its features. A
Instructional Video and more User friendly manual would go a hell of a
long way. The Arp Oddyssey Manual is a hell of a lot of fun it's
informing and it teaches you how to use the board even gives you some
patches to try by guiding you through how to use them. The Roland Gaia
does the same the manual runs you through how to use the features on the
keyboard step by step and it has an instructional DVD with it. The
Prophet Rev 2... all you get in the box is the Keyboard, power cord and
the worst instruction manual I have ever read in my life. It doesn't
tell you anything and even worse it's long. It's like trying to read a
Trigonometry Book. They really need to step their game up and stop
assuming that everyone that buys their stuff is familiar with it already
or is a synth programmer. What's so hard about showing your buyers how
to set up patches and use the keyboard they just brought? I was really
disappointed when I got mine and it had nothing to help guide me into
learning it except this badly written manual that barely even has any
pictures of what they're describing in it. You want people to make music
and use your gear make it easier for them to learn how to use it. I was
thankful as hell when I found Paul Dither's Rev 2 video showing all the
functions of the Keyboard and how they worked. I know that all Synths operate on the same principles but not all synths are created the same. I was honestly about to return this thing back to the store because I was getting frustrated trying to learn how to use it and make my own patches.

Well, several months after my initial comment, I bought one (16 voices model) and, part of what I said is still true, but part of it is not. It's still is a Curtis chips machine, but Dave has done something to them that lessens the "coloring" or "flavor", so that the REV2 is half way between a Prophet 6 and a Prophet 08, IMHO. And I like it.
Also, Dave did not mention in this video that the REV2 is also probably a direct reaction to the very successful 12 voices, very first polysynth from Behringer, the Deepmind 12, which I also own and is an unbeatable value for price good sounding machine.

Love it! The best synth DSI has ever made (VCO or DCO). People under-estimate this and have no idea how potent and flexible it is while sounding fully analog (if you want). The filter is more than easily tamable and the DCOS can sound a lot more alive with the new features of REV2 (vs Prophet 08 which I never fully liked).

I bought a REV2 and thank Dave Smith for making such a great quality synth at a great price, build quality is excellent, looks beautiful, keybed is great. Just a pleasure to wake up to and use, looks like a prophet, sounds like a prophet/oberheim/jupiter (6 and 8), yet is packed with modern features and tons of modulation. Stunning!

Sorry for doubting you in the past Dave!!

Hey Dave thanks for coming back, and continuing to build the greatest Synth's ever. So how about creating something many people could use and would surely purchase..

You'd have a huge customer base in an instant build a useful addition to the many people who own Multi timbral Workstations like Korg Trinity, Triton, & TR series many versions of each The Roland Workstations D-50, the JV 80. 1080, 2080, 3080,

All the Yamaha Motif Workstations, and the Many Kurzweil K2000, K2500, K2600, you'd make many people very happy keep in mind all these beasts have multiple outputs as well after all shouldn't we consider any output source, just like a more complex OSC output

So you r OSC would be the actual output from your workstation direct outs from 2 to 4 and up to 8 .Each channel or just 1 or a stereo pair could be After Effected with Filters, Modulation, and Envelopes, and more Delay, reverbs, flangers, chorus, overdrive, distortion or any other stomp box type FX.

By while allowing for a Wet / Dry feed, allowing the Original sound output both paths direct out to mixer 1 path Un-effected and the other path with Effected ones to be blended or folded back on itself.

Lets face it all Guitar type stomp boxes are Simply Synth modules tailored to a specific FX so imagine all the possibilities that would offer * someone with 8 direct outs.

An already completed sound patche(s) acting as the OSC . Then being resynthesized and mixed with what ever functions a buyer purchases. One's they could continue to buy one at a time. Euro rack sized held in a frame sitting like a control panel with easy access conveniently hovering above their already owned Synth.

Including step seq. or multi channels ( hey its just another sale ) much like a Modular system without OSC.'s just Modifiers and a input matrix patch bay ? And why reinvent the wheel when there's so many Euro Rack Modules available allow everyone in on the fun.

I could draw it up for you if you'd like. I was a P5 owner x2 plus your seq. and the DC Buss just might be inspired to take it all the way to the bank $$ write me if I've got your attention

I also had one of the first P8's as a Beta tester , but the one I was sent had an aneurysm and it had to go back. Also worked on the Six track demo seq.s with Rich Godinez.

Hopefully my idea will lead you to yet another huge hit. Imagine an add on for the Workstation synths. Giving new life to a platform that many of us can't afford to replace every time a newer one comes out. Besides how many Drum Kits do people need or built in seq.s The whole idea of MIDI was to chain all our gear together allowing the different tonal sounds of one brand with another or several others.

So the idea of adding more fun & functionality to enhance our already well known and still useful Keyboards, With those things or features only available to modular products, And the benefit of a Dave Smith design , filters, sound and to be able to buy it a piece or two at a time for us older guys perhaps now having fixed incomes & wifes to still answer too.

Opens up an entirely new market place, I've got several other great idea's to for other needed affordable products. If you're willing to listen. Oh sorry I forgot so what happened to our relationship. Well you went off to the land of the rising sun. Godinez became the National sales manager at Kawai dragged me along as a product specialist & then send me all over the midwest doing Demo's Seminar's Clinic's Namm shows & Midwest Sales manager = Reptile. long story for another day I was the 4th member I.M.A. taught MIDI & Digital Recording tech @ De Paul yes I'm that Italian guy who looked like Gino Vannelli who lived in Chicagoland area. Doug was working for you at SC in those days.
Best Regards

It's great that Dave Smith finally figured out what 5 octaves is but really, what he should be doing / have done is take a 5 octave keyboard and put it on the prophet 6 and make the keyboard everyone wanted instead of the crippled prophet 6 as is, or the current 5 octave prophet rev 2, which no one was clamoring for.

Really, Dave Smith knows better. Or does he? Maybe I overestimated him.

Really Dave - make a 5 octave Prophet 6 mkII and stop embarrassing yourself already.

Dave Smith Instruments - is it possible to work with Curtis Electronics and get the original VCO, VCF, VCA's reissued (I think they've already redone the VCO's) and start using them in your products? The chips that were used back in the day in your prophet 5, Jupiter 6, oberheim OB8, OBXa + a whole lot of other synths. They do have a very recognisable sound...and its something I would like to see. The REV2 and Prophet 6 are great synths...but I'd love to hear what you could do with the original chips. Also, is there any chance you could start adding analog effects to your line up?

Just as a side note - check out the artist Com Truise. He exclusively uses an old Sequential Split 8. Every synth sound on his albums are Split 8. Check out 'In Decay' and 'Galactic Melt'. Just goes to show analog is still relevant today...

This is awesome!  I cherish my Prophet '08.  I didn't really take to it until I dove into the modulation matrix and split/ stack programs.  I once lost a whole afternoon running CV through the expression input routed to various destinations...absolutely wonderful!  I'm really excited about the Rev2 sequencer as on the '08 w/o the plugin programming musical sequences is painful and no polyphony.  Variable wave shapes and the sub oscillator open up a whole new dimension of possibilities.  Thank you DSI!

Hi, may I know if there is any difference between 8-voice version and 16-voice version besides the polyphony? I really like Rev2 by far but I do not really need 16 voices, so I may just want a 8-voice but cheaper version if other features are all the same.
