Best External Hard Drives and Storage for Video Editing

Hey Sean, do you have an updated video about external hard drives?

This video is 7 years old.. these days 2024.. I use Dropbox and Google Drive which is cheap cloud space.. Also I have a pro Canva Account and I keep most of my Graphics on there that I will use for Thumbnails because that is where I make my thumbnails.

Presently I use two 4TB HHDs for most storage, one is for video storage and one is backup of the video storage. I have other external drives for other data. I've always been big on backing up all data locally so if anything decides to take dirt nap there's always another copy of the data. I don't do clouds for anything. I only leave the videos I'm working on on my laptop SSD.

ALL DONE FREE

i found a nas and 1 14tb drive for $1,000

This is very helpful! I had so much terrible trying to edit videos with premiere with everything running on same hard drive it was a complete mess and very frustrating!

Guys, I am so lost. I am just beginning, trying to find out what I need to do to keep my media safe. I bought a WD external hard drive(I am a Mac user). Do I need to copy my media onto that? Do I need to move my media onto that in order to free up room on my computer? Idk where to find answers....

Invest into Synology, you will love how flexible and reliable they are.
i implemented different brands at my clients and Synology came to the top, same as what i use at Home.
As for drives goes, most enterprise drives are Hitachi storages as they came in the data center by a skid load of them.
no one really use WD in data center
I seen Google uses small percentage of WD

I cant help thinking the rugged drives are a bit of a rip off when all they have done is tack a bit of rubber on the case. Surely you can just put the drive in a case, or wrap in foam if you drop stuff a lot.

hi i bought a adata 1 tera byte and i have an old laptop with usb 2 only the adata hard drive says it is usb 3 and compatible with usb 2 then i started to hear clicking noise from the hard drive when i searched they say no enough power from usb 2 did u try your sony hard drive with usb 2

I hate western digital because I bought a my passport for MAC last year and I’ve gone through about 5 or 6 cables for it. Now I only use the $500 Lacie SSD thunderbolt drives

I have an external SSD that i move call my Final Cut pro projects to after completetion, I keep the originals on SD card and make a copy to a NAS at home before purging any SSD card.

External hard drives are the best. It’s nice to have more permanent storage within my MacBook Pro but as we all know the price does increase. With that being said LaCie external hard drive is what I work with for storing all my files. Including school documents. Anyways, thanks for the tips Sean
