In Endless Space 2, you can get off the nodes very quickly. The tech you need is Baryonic Shielding.

I think it's a great game. You can actually go quite deep into the battle system. It looks like all you do is watch, but you can influence a great deal by designing your ships around the tactics cards you're using, and using the three lanes. You turrets do have firing arcs, and the path they travel on each lane affects how well their firing arcs will be able to fire. Ships will fire across lanes as well. Depending on your play style you can just get brute force victories, or you can get into the details and make it more interesting.
