ОтветитьDesign for assembly and repair is the place I fall down when building things for my R2-D2. Right now I've got version 2 of a new part printing because version 1 has plenty of room for the assembley screw... but no room for the screw*driver*.
And I've come to realise that threaded inserts only help if you expect to undo the screw a lot. If you're just putting it together once, screwing straight into the plastic works well enough.
Finally, air armour just makes me think of the Battle of Britain. Everyone remembers the Spitfires, but the Hurricanes did yeoman work there - in no small part because they were hard to shoot down. Because they were wooden framed, fabric covered planes which made them a little slower and little less responsive (fabric is less aerodynamic than aluminium) but meant that much of the time, German cannon shells would just punch through without exploding because the fabric wasn't solid enough to detonate the fuse.
Can you recommend some sources on rules, how to build cages, streamed events etc for antweight combat robotics? There is a lot of wonderful, weird stuff posted online and I am really getting confused :P

ОтветитьAngus, have you tried Fiberflex CF-TPU for these robots? (yes, carbon fibre tpu, sounds mad, seems to work!) Clough42 just did a video on using it for milling machine way covers and the first thing I thought of when he was talking about it was your combat robots 😁

ОтветитьI would design FDM parts in the right orientations, then glue them together. instead of printing in one piece.
3D prints are very orientation sensitive. like any stranded material like wood or sinew.
I wouldn't mind printing one for shits and giggles, but I don't know of a good free model.
Others want money for them, which I'm allergic to!
I like using plastites with undersized holes for my US antweights and beetleweight, woodscrews work well too. On the rare occasion when one does get pulled out, it brings chunks of tpu with it since it holds so well, and it’s a lot lighter than through bolts or standoffs.

ОтветитьAs a repair tech (live audio gear) I cannot tell you how happy I am to hear a design engineer talking about taking "ease of repair" into account. EVERYTHING in a machine is either a consumable, or something that has the potential of failure. You will ALWAYS need to disassemble something, even if it's for lubing/maintenance, so why not take that into consideration during design

1. Have you used Plastites or wood screws in your prints? Other than the the options you mentioned, those are ones I’ve heard from other builders.
2. Does Australia have Plastic Antweight competitions? To clarify, the type of competition that only allows PLA, PLA+, ABS/ASA, or PETG. If so, I’d love to hear your tips and tricks for those!
3. Any sneak peaks on what future episodes there may be?👀
will threaded inserts still work on US antweights? cause my frame is going to be nylon(idk if cf or gf yet) so i think threaded inserts will work

ОтветитьGuilty multiple times of small to no clearances. Because I intentionally avoid F360 and I use FreeCad, there are cases that I can't (or I do not know how) to do clearances in complex geometries especially when one object is derived by extruding into another object. Then sanding comes into play
