After 8 years on a vegan diet I finally developed a B12 deficiency. I have taken B12 now and then, but never regularly because for me it caused acne, so it took quite some time for a deficiency to settle in. I had body pain in my upper torso and chronic fatigue. At first I thought I was sick, so I just stayed in bed, but it didn't go away even after two weeks. So I read up on the symptoms and found out it could be B12 deficiency. I took 3000 mcgs that day and my symptoms disappeared in 8 hours. Been taking 500 mcgs per day for a month now. Suprisingly, I didn't get any acne again.

Don't underestimate B12 deficiency!

I am a retired RN and have worked Geriatric Psych. We always checked an incoming patients B12. Amazing how many were deficient. We would give them B12 injections and more often than not their symptoms would improve.

I don't eat vegetables- pretty much none whatsoever. So it's with some irony I was diagnosed with not being able to absorb b12 through digestion- an injection every three months instead. Who said God hasn't got a sense of humour!

I have allergies to nuts, dairy, soy (and also legumes), can I safely follow of Whole food plant based diet without deficiency? I understand the importance of b-12 and do supplement it when eating plant based but end up going back to meat because I am worried I won’t have enough of what I need. I do feel best when eating plant based though.

I have a problem. I've been plant based for a month. Yesterday took methylcobalamin B12 1000 mcg. Went to bed early & exhausted w light headache. Head was buzzing like someone with a high fever. I had bad dreams and woke up feeling exhausted and ached all over. Is this an allergy to B12?

Primates don't get B12 just from feces, they get it from insects like termites for example, they are a good source of B12. Greger doesn't mention that.

Disappointed. You’d think it was paid for by the beef industry. Please always note that many meat eaters are also low or deficient, only bacteria make B12 and EVERYONE over 50 should supplement 🤦🏻‍♀️

I am mostly plant based and I have a sensitivity to stimulants such as caffeine taken at anytime of the day. It makes me jittery and I won't sleep at night even with small amounts. I also have a huge sensitivity to B12 and it keeps me awake at night when I take it even when I have nutritional yeast. How can I get this important vitamin in me and still sleep at night?

That tingling numbness pain hard-to-explain symptom also called glove-stocking neuropathy. At least mine took the shape of glove stocking. It is awful! Can’t sleep, can’t get comfortable, no relief. Horrible! Yes, caused by B12 deficiency.
The relief was very rapid once I was prescribed B12!

I'm not a vegetarian or vegan. But my diet isn't the best. My symptom was the color changing feet. it'd change from pink to red to an ugly purple. they'd get numb, tingly and the toes would burn. its worse at night where my feet swell and get tight and burn (like now) so bad it'd wake me up at night.

I went to urgent care and after both a blood and urine test they confirmed it was lack of B12 with slight anemia. it was much better news than what my roommates and I originally thought, which was diabetes.

To give anyone curious an idea of what the feet issue feels like, it's like when your foot falls asleep. its numb and tingly, but at the same time it feels like the skin is pulled tight and sometimes there's a squeezing feeling, like someone is gripping your foot or toes tightly. its a weird pressure that's not pleasant, or can be painful. then there's the burning along with that squeeze and you want to move it to make it stop, but all it does is make you want to clench and wait for it to pass or cry out.

Elevating my feet makes it so much worse. and sometimes a heat sensation will shoot up my leg and bring discomfort to my knee or up my shin bone. the feeling or weird pain reminds me of growing pains I'd get as a kid.

also having balancing issues and over the past several months my memory has been getting worse and worse.

Something I have always wondered..... I've been a strict vegan for more than 12 years now and have not ever been b12 deficient. Where am I getting this from in my diet then? I used to think it was b12 fortified soy milk though I stopped having that quite some time ago as well though I am still not deficient going by my blood tests, what gives?

Michael Greger was doing so well, until the vegan ideologue in him stepped in and he started the whole BS that you can get B12 from drinking the right water, and that you do not need to eat animal foods.
There is no evidence whatsoever for this. The problem is that Greger, like most vegans, cannot accept that Humans are omnivors that must derive nutrition from both plant and animal foods. If that facts denmy your ideology, then either deny the facts of make up your own facts.
If you want to be a vegan to spare the lives of animals, that's fine. But don't confuse ethical issues with science, with nutritional facts. Like Albert Einstein once said:
"Ethics is an exclusively Human concern, with no furhter consequences for the Universe."
It is a dact that Humans are omnivorous animals that must consume other animals to be pefectly healthy. From B12 to retinol, we cannot make several essntial nutrients only found in animal sources. Even DHA, which algae does have, can only be obtained from animals in the ecological niche that Humans inhabit. Humans do not "normally" go deep into the ocean to get algae. We eat fish, not algae.
