Nice work Nick, such a brilliant record to play along to!!!
ОтветитьPhil Collins was so creative as a drummer. You never get the feeling he “mailed in” any drum part
ОтветитьThanks Nick! I find Groovy Thursdays to be very "fulPhiling" 🥁😁 The Abacab tour, what a fantastic first concert! My first Genesis concert was the Mama Tour. 👍I always liked Another Record, glad you decided to include it.
ОтветитьNDV playing Phil playing Genesis - doesn’t get any better than that. Love it. 🤘🤘🤘
ОтветитьNice work Nick. That kit kicks ass! Great audio.
ОтветитьI think PC was one of the first drummers who really proved that drummers could write hits where the drums carried the main hook of the song. I still have my old vinyl of ABACAB.
ОтветитьYou should dive into Phil doing Something's Going On from Frida's record
Ответить“Turn It On Again” was the first Genesis song where what the drums were doing stood out to me when I was younger. Really made me sit up and take note and then, go backwards to the earlier albums. What a treasure trove of drumming Phil gave us.
ОтветитьSo much fun to listen to these PC grooves! Off topic would you consider doing a video of the sound, recording, etc set-up (mics, DAW, audio interface, etc) as well as how you choose to mix for these recordings. Monumental request I know.
ОтветитьI saw Seconds Out, Three sides Live, Duke and Abacab, as well as a return in Ottawa in 2007 i think, and Peter Gabriel 3 times and will see him here again in Ottawa in September. I think I Qualify as a Genesis fan. I used the Duke and Abacab albums as practice in those days to get any of those chops and especially with China's....eg. Dodo
ОтветитьWhat snare are you playing?
ОтветитьCanadian judges give this a 10.5 for degree of grooveability...
And an 11 for the greatest facial expressions on the planet!😲
Damn good one this week Nick!👍
So choice! If anyone is qualified to break these down, it's NDV, having played with Gabriel, toured with Hackett, and actually played drums on a Genesis record. Sooooo much awesomeness here!
ОтветитьGlad youre doing it from t kit Nick. It def helps. But, more importantly.....love a good bro-on-bro grudge 🤣🍻.
ОтветитьBrilliant Nick!!
ОтветитьIve always thought abacab had lot more subtilities in the drumming department than most would think. The reggae feel of the verses on dodo are also worth analyzing
ОтветитьGreat tutorial! Abacab is such a fantastic record, full of amazing grooves. Thanks for breaking down three of them for us.
One of my favourite things about this record is the neat trick that they pulled with the handclaps on "No Reply at All." Because they're only on the third beat of each bar, they sound like backbeats played at half of the song's tempo. This creates an amazing illusion: the song feels like it's being played at both 128 bpm and 64 bpm at the same time. Without the handclaps, the groove would feel frenetic; with them, it sits right in the pocket. It's also a neat sonic metaphor: just like the song's protagonist, the beat is being pulled in two directions at once. It's such a simple move, but it's so clever and it serves the song so well.
Gotta throw in Naminamu and You Might Recall from the same sessions. Phil was becoming more concise but also more dynamic. Killer job Nick!
ОтветитьNico, the man! Thank you, brother! :)
ОтветитьThere are 10k grooves representing the genius of Phil Collins on drums that Abacab, probably one of the worst Genesis album, does not express.
ОтветитьGreat grooves from a fantastic record. Thanks for sharing.✌️
ОтветитьThx for playing the grooves of my favorite band 😊🎉
ОтветитьThat 'another record' groove is really unique and tasteful with the minimal use of cymbals. It sounds so cool. 'No reply at all' super cool funky song and 'Dodo' bombastic big Phil fills are ridiculous too. Thanks for the grooves!!
ОтветитьYour channel is just a godsend for me. I'm watching your video with a smile, because there are so many positive and understandable explanations. English is not my native language, but I watch and listen without subtitles. this is especially a pleasure. Thanks, Nick.
ОтветитьDODO so fun!!!!!!!!Thanks Nick. You and Tim Pierce are the happiest most excited players on the Ytube!!!!
ОтветитьI really like these Groovy Thursdays with you behind the kit. Keep it up! I Enjoy all of your videos here on your channel and the ones you do for Sweetwater.
ОтветитьGenesis + NDV what an amazing meeting...I love them!!!!!!!!!!!!
ОтветитьGlad you did Another Record. I love that one.
ОтветитьI see Roland Orzabal finally sent you to his hair stylist.
ОтветитьI'd love to see you on drums with Mr. BIG❤❤
ОтветитьSuperb as usual Nick. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
ОтветитьLove how you’re doing these now. Great camera angles. Keep ‘em coming!
ОтветитьDo some Calling All Stations stuff !
ОтветитьGreat tribute to a master!
ОтветитьSo much fun! I love Abacab and this was totally awesome 😎
ОтветитьWelcome to Mr.Big
I hope you enjoy it
Excellent video NDV 👍
ОтветитьDamn Nick your story about missing shows makes me think of my dad, He had tickets to see Led Zeppelin on their "in through the out door" tour in montreal. Montreal being their first date of the tour, John Bonham passed away shortly before the tour started :(
ОтветитьYellow always looks great on a drum set
ОтветитьI'm a guitarist who always wanted to play drums, and damnit Nick, you're really pushing me over the edge to buy a drumkit....(I also love that you can appreciate the 80s Genesis era)
ОтветитьThat was my first Genesis concert as well, Nick! It changed my life. Then they made another album Three Sides Live. Dodo Lurkner sounded so amazing, but when they played the In The Cage Medley, it was my first time to ever see Genesis and my jaw was on the floor. We saw them at Reunion Arena in Dallas, TX and after that night they’ve been my favorite band since. I was a sophomore at the Arts Magnet and a friend of ours just so happened to have two extra tickets. So, our lead guitarist went and since I’m also a left handed drummer before they even came out on stage I saw these two massive kits that looked like birds wings from atop. We had lower balcony side stage front row seats practically hanging right over Phil Collins. The next morning at school, everyone at the Arts Magnet was blaring Genesis in their cars in the school parking lot. That was when all the New Bohemians went there as well. Kenny Withrow, Edie Brickell, Brandon Aly and a bunch of us other drummers. Amazing concert! I told my band Phil Collins is going to become huge! He wasn’t well known in 81’- 82’. But it didn’t take him long! Also, Daryl Stuermer is one of the most underrated guitarists I’ve ever seen! I never missed Phil & Chester again since that night. My favorite band since that first night I saw them.
ОтветитьThanks, this series is great. May I please share a request for a future Thursday- Rob Ellis on drums with PJ Harvey, Hair (in 5/4, sometimes plays in 3 over this), Joe (6/8 and 3/4), Oh Stella (awesome tom groove).
Ответить"Found the man reported mis-sing... He wandered in his house!" -Maybe next time.
ОтветитьI love that album as well. One of my favourites. I always love Phil Collins as a drummer. And often you hear him drum you instantly know it is him. Love your video and the passion and precision you explain with.
ОтветитьI understand holding the grudge against your brother, Nick! My first time seeing them was at the Forum in 77. Unbelievable. I was on tour myself when they toured after "And Then There Were Three" and we passed their gig in Oakland on the way to our gig which was hard for me when I saw their name on the marquee. The next day was a free day for me so I hopped a flight down to LA and took my little brother and drove down to San Diego to see them and the equipment was late getting there from Oakland so the concert started at 10pm. Again, typically amazing show and my brother was blown away.
But 1980 was the bonus year for me. I saw them at the Long Beach Arena, and the next night they did a surprise show at the Roxy on Sunset. To this day, that was the best concert I've ever seen and I've seen a lot of them. The night after that, they started a 3-night stand at the Greek Theater and I was there for one of them.
Although I love a lot of the old stuff, the zenith of the band for me was "Trick of The Tail" and "Wind and Wuthering." I love Peter Gabriel and have seen a number of his shows, I even helped carry him during his trust fall during "Lay Your Hands On Me" at the Greek Theater. But the combination of writers that made up Genesis in 1976 through 78, for me was the best. After Steve Hackett left, it changed the chemistry. Similarly, getting The Farm combined with their needing to compose solo material, meant that the songs were created out of jams. I like that stuff from then on and have all the albums. But it isn't the same as the love I have for the older stuff to this day which still stands up against the test of time. And the drum parts Collins composed for their songs are still the most fun of any to play.
Must have been a blast for you to have played with them. Thanks as always for the great content you share, Nick!
