I keep getting the catalyst codes for bank 1 and bank 2 on my 03 chevy silverado 1500 with the 5.3L but there is a problem. The codes are intermittent. Meaning the engine light goes away after a little time and the codes only seem to show up after some harder driving/acceleration. I'm not a mechanic, I do some little things, but I was under the impression that catalyst issues don't just go away like this. I'm not getting o2 sensor codes but to me since this is intermittent that maybe my downstream o2 sensors are not reading correctly. What do you think? I'm curious if you had any ideas on this because I haven't really been able to find a whole lot of info. The exhaust smells but it's not a lot. My engine does have over 200k on it.

When you talked about the catalytic converter smell it help me. I have been smelling something weird for a few days. Since I add new exhaust to my car but that wasn't one parts I've replace yet. Thanks for the tip.

I sometimes get the P0420 code. I wonder if they means my catalyst converter is dying since the code goes away after continues driving. (And allowing the car to warm up before driving anywhere)
