První s akcí Pták roku přišli v Německu v roce 1971. Pak se akce postupně rozšiřovala do dalších zemí. V České republice poprvé Ptákem roku byla v 1992 Vlaštovka obecná. V letošním roce byl zvolen Polák velký (Aythya ferina). Patří mezi vodní ptáky, kteří k životu potřebují rozmanité mokřady s ostrůvky a rákosinami. Takových je ale v Česku už jen minimum. Polák proto hnízdí na rybnících, kde se ale potýká s problémy. Současné rybníky jsou totiž přeplněny kapry. Kapr je dokonalý všežravec a dokáže v rybníku zlikvidovat téměř veškeré bezobratlé živočichy a jejich larvy žijící na dně i ve vodním sloupci. Problém není v tom, že by hlady trpěli dospělí ptáci, ale mláďata. Ta jsou životně závislá na živočišné potravě, které je tak málo, že zpravidla nestačí kachňata nasytit. Kromě neutěšeného stavu rybniční krajiny musí od září do listopadu čelit lovcům. Přestože je od roku 2015 celosvětově ohroženým druhem, v Česku stále patří mezi lovnou zvěř. Proto chce ČSO upozornit na špatný stav rybniční krajiny a na problémy, kterým její obyvatelé čelí. Zároveň chce dosáhnout vyřazení poláka velkého ze seznamů lovné zvěře a také informovat o zákazu užívání olověných broků v mokřadech. Na následky otrav olovem po pozření olověných broků v Evropě ročně hynou tisíce vodních ptáků.

The first Bird of the Year event came in Germany in 1971. Then the event gradually expanded to other countries. For the first time in the Czech Republic, the Barn Swallow was the Bird of the Year in 1992. This year, the Common pochard (Aythya ferina) was chosen. They are among the water birds that need diverse wetlands with islands and reeds to live. But there are only a minimum of such in the Czech Republic. The polecat therefore nests in ponds, where it faces problems. The current ponds are overcrowded with carp. Carp is a perfect omnivore and can eliminate almost all invertebrates and their larvae living on the bottom and in the water column in the pond. The problem is not that the adult birds suffer from hunger, but the young ones. They are vitally dependent on animal food, which is so scarce that it is usually not enough to feed the ducklings. In addition to the dismal state of the pond landscape, they have to face hunters from September to November. Although it has been a globally endangered species since 2015, in the Czech Republic it is still among game animals. That is why the CSO wants to draw attention to the poor state of the pond landscape and the problems faced by its inhabitants. At the same time, he wants to achieve the elimination of the big polecat from the lists of game animals and also to inform about the ban on the use of lead shot in wetlands. Thousands of waterfowl die every year in Europe as a result of lead poisoning after eating lead shot.
