My Persona 2 Eternal Punishment Journey

Tatsuya Sudou, the Leo of the Masked Circle in the original, is named that because he’s meant to be a foil to MC Tatsuya. Sudou was blinded (literally) by his rage and thirst for revenge, but MC Tatsuya is incredibly apathetic and kind of just coasting through life. Both have the potential to go down a dark path, but one doesn’t, and that’s kind of the point.

Tatsuzou was also mentioned in the original game as Sudou’s father, who considered his son worthless. He’s just named that, his son is the one with the thematic name relevance.

Also, while both Tatsuyas were shown to be taken advantage of, Tatsuzou and many others in the new world purposefully took advantage of others. The main director, the artist, and the writer of both P2 games have stated that Innocent Sin was made to represent a child’s perspective of life, and Eternal Punishment an adult’s perspective. That’s why manipulation is everywhere, and that’s why Tatsuya was acting the way he did throughout this game: he was trying to act like an adult. One of the worst things adults regularly do (as this game shows) is push other people away, so as a result, Tatsuya was slowly isolating himself from everyone and diving deeper into his guilt and pain.

I can honestly say I've enjoyed every single SMT/Persona video you've done.

I'm happy this game is still getting some attention. I would absolutely love for a part 3 to this game. The story is so incredibly depressing i feel it deserves some sort of legitimate closure. Probably won't happen but man the ending of EP hurts to think about.

I think its a crime how Atlus dont care about Persona 1 and 2, P2 duology is amazing...has the best lore in the franchise IMO.

In Innocent Sin, Tatsuya Suou and Sudou have similar names because Jun was trying to recreate the Masked Circle from his childhood as best he could. In Eternal Punishment, the three Tats' names are so similar because Daddy Sudou probably just named his son after him haha No story reason, though lolz

I started mine recently and man i was not expecting on enjoying the gameplay and the GRIND in innocent sin i had so many mental breakdowns during combat but In eternal punishment it's a different experience

Plot twist: Nyarlathotep actually returns on P6.

When I first saw Akechi's true form in Persona 5 I thought "Is that a goddamn JOKER!?"


Sadly not the case unless Atlus states otherwise, but that would have been pretty damn cool.

I haven't played this game, but watching this makes me wish that they carried over more things into 3,4, and 5. I love that there are adult persona users, for one. And that the whole party participates in Velvet Room stuff.

Also, I like that all the weird stuff is happening in the real world. I love the (Dark Hour/Midnight Channel/ Metaverse) but it's cool seeing civilians involved in the crazy shit

Also, the point of characters' names being alike IS a plot point in these games.
Tatsuya/Katsuya Suou are similar just because they're brothers as well as Tatsuzou/Tatsuya Sudou being father and son. However, the two Tatsuyas having same name and similar sounding surname is intended as Sudou is kind of an "evil parallel" of Suou, it's especially made clear in Innocent Sin as Jun thought Tatsuya Suou killed Maya, when in truth it was Tatsuya Sudou. Not to mention the game also points out Sudou was a student in Seven Sisters.
Now what comes to Takuya, it's likely to parallel how in IS world, Tatsuya Sudou attacked Tatsuya and Maya and in EP world his victim in same incident was a boy named Takuya, not to mention her sister sees him in Suou.

If this version is the same as the old ps1 version, there IS technically more content.
The 7 sisters high bonus post game dungeon where you can choose whose in your party.
Unfortunately you need to beat the game again, this time using Eri.
After you've done that (beat the game going both the Nanjo then Eri route or vice versa) you should get an option that allows you to
Play said dungeon where philemon is the boss, and he's arguably harder than Nyarlythotep.

And so, Persona 2 ends in the most fitting way possible.

I love this games so much

The PS1 English voice acting for this game is pretty wonky in places ngl, but there are some gems. One of Katsuya's win lines is "Can you apply the penal code to demons?" which is just so on brand and one of Ulala's intro lines is "Don't underestimate me you f*cking bastards" (There is an actual censor beep censoring the line) making her the first persona character to say fuck in a voice line. Iconic.

Of all the talk of remaking Persona 3....these games are in MUCH more of a need of a remake, imho. Second only to Persona 4 in terms of my favorite cast of characters. I think it's attachment to 1 may make that difficult, but maybe make that an excuse to remake 1 as well?

Um so, about other Persona games being about Tatsuya... There is a quite popular theory that The Reaper from modern Persona games is actually Tatsuya Sudou: Reaper has very similar clothes with Sudou, wears a bag mask, and not to mention it doesn't have one eye - the same eye that Sudou gets injured in both games. Basically theory says that Sudou became Reaper, which is a Shadow/Persona similar to how people in this game turned into Joker, or because he was mostly influenced by Nyarlothotep and thus turned into Shadow forever punished roaming around & looking for prey.
Some people also theorise Reaper uses two guns because to Tatsuya Sudou, Maya was the person who ruined his life the most, so he decides to adapt her weapon of choice.
So while it's not Tatsuya Suou, technically all modern Persona games have possibly connection/cameo of A Tatsuya.
