Yeah, lack of an improved translation is the only thing keeping this from being definitive for me. The Retranslation stands as the best version still even despite the automap.
ОтветитьNintendo was victorious in the 16-bit war??? 😂😂😂😂 joke of the year
ОтветитьIt's slightly weird how Final Fantasy went on to be a bigger beast than Phantasy Star. The original Final Fantasy from 87 is nowhere near the same league as this first Phantasy Star - also 87.
Ответить-1 correction. NES didn't dominate the world. It won out in US and Japanese markets. Most other countries didn't even see the console and the Master System was the go-to console which is why most gamers outside of the US wound up getting a Megadrive and never gave the SNES a second look
ОтветитьDefinitely explains where Etrian Odyssey got some of its Inspiron from.
ОтветитьGreat video but you made some mistakes here. The Sega Master System released in 1986 not 1985. While it absolutely dominates the Nes in graphical capabilities it falls short in the sound department.
ОтветитьMan, 10000%. I gotta listen to the non-FM music. Grew up playing that sucker so much.
ОтветитьThe SMS did not actually have "better" sound than the NES, in the US that is.... I kinda like it better from a nostalgia standpoint though.
Ответитьgreat review. do all Sega Ages Switch releases have neat improvements like this? i was assuming you'd be paing premium prices for just old roms. lol
Ответитьthe map is for sure a gamechanger. makes me want to play the game again
ОтветитьNintendo didnt win but they did have slightly more sales than the Genesis megadrive. Sony smacked them both aside. SEGA should have taken the deal.
ОтветитьI think I somehow accidentally deleted the laconian axe. Are there any phantasy star experts out there who know if I can get it back? Im not even sure how it got deleted.
ОтветитьBest Sega Ages ever made was PS1 on playstation 2. Just perfect!
Ответить"Blast processing" LOL. Best marketing ever.
ОтветитьThere´s a lot of good memories on this game.
I was 10 when this game was released and I grew up playing Phantasy Star, I played on Master System, Genesis using the power base, PS2 and now on Nintendo Switch.
I don´t remember how many times I finished it, my first RPG and the best game ever.
Is this the re-translated version?
Ответитьi wish they used the japanese names. perylomate. alyssa. tyrone. most of all, lutz. sigh
ОтветитьI genuinely prefer the music without the FM sound system. So no, the Japanese sound track is not "Objectively better", you could the sound quality is objectively better, but not the sound track itself. Music is purely subjective, i personally love loads of LoFi noise music, which is purposefully made to have objectively low sound quality, but the music isn't objectively worse or better than any music. Music is complexly subjective. Awh whatever, anyways I'm a total sucker for crunchy 8 bit instruments, didn't grow up with this game, infact i wasn't even born when it came out so i hold not nostalgia for the older soundtrack, but i love it anyways
Ответитьill be honest the theme song both with the chip from the mk 3 and without on the master system don't really do much for me. not the greatest theme music by any stretch of the imagination. not bad, either, though.
ОтветитьThis is one of the first games I ever bought for my Sega Master System. I couldn't wait to get my hands on it after seeing a commercial for it on a Detroit tv station from my home in Windsor, Ontario. I remember there was no hint book or guides back then. It took me FOREVER to figure out how to get the passport at the beginning of the game by going into the second-hand shop in Scion and purchasing the "secrets." You had to go in and out of that second-hand shop 3 times before he gives you the passport. And, YES, I remember trying to plot out the dungeons on paper and getting all turned around if you fell through a trap in the floor. Those were the good ol' days!!! I'm even old enough (48) to remember playing King's Quest III "To Heir is Human" on 3 floppy disks at my friends house on his computer. That was a frustrating game too. But they finally came out with a hint book that had rectangular boxes and you could use a special clear marker to make the hints appear. I still have a Master System and Phantasy Star. I just ordered the A/V cable for it and hooked it up and couldn't believe that my games from like 30 years ago were still saved on the cartridge!!!!!
ОтветитьMy first RPG and it changed my life.
Ответитьit kicked Final Fantasys ass back then and it still does today
Ответитьwould yall be upset if Nintendo would have added their pokemon style graphics to the game?
ОтветитьSooo, was this the 1980's game of the decade?
ОтветитьI remember playing the GBA-Port, that also came with the seconmd and third game. That was in 2004, I think.
For the first game, you really needed a map, because the dungeons became just convulted later on and even then you could get lost if you stepped into pit tile. This port? Forget traps or getting lost and never finding out of a dungeon. Just use the map and happy dungeonm crawling. It's a much needed improvement.
So it is not full screen?
ОтветитьThe NES didn't really dominate the world, pretty much just Japan & NA, it sold pretty poorly in most other parts. Alex The Kid was more known than the Mario games in Europe, Brazil & Australia. And for JRPGs most parts of the world had to look at Sega since almost none of the 8 & 16 bit JRPGs got release there, Final Fantasy 7 was the first Final Fantasy to see a quasi world-wide release for example. Nintendo did do well with the Game Boy, however, but they never dominated the market here until the Wii.
ОтветитьI WOULD like this if they did NOT port it to the fucking NINTENDO SWITCH. God, why is every game on it being ported to it or why is that system POPULAR?
ОтветитьPscave for translated ps2 Phantasy Star 1 &2 remakes
Ответитьkinda weird to not release the sega ages version from the ps2 era
ОтветитьWe need a master system mini.
Ответить"Played it when you was a kid"
Today I identify as older than I actually am....
So THAT’S how many HP Darkfalz has... man he was hard to beat back in the day.
ОтветитьI played it for the first time this year and I really loved it. I hope they'll release sega ages versions of the sequels as well.
ОтветитьYou know, I kind of want to see a Phantasy Star game made by the Sega's Etrian Odyssey team, ala Persona Q.
ОтветитьIs the Mega Drive version of Phantasy Star has same graphics from the original or is it different but close to the graphics like PS2 not looking like Saturn like Graphics but Genesis like graphics?
Because both are Japanese and not a lot of videos or prove the Mega Drive is different graphics are different.
Kinda wish they added the new animation look from the ps2 ages 2500 version.
Ответитьthe mysterious ps2 version is still unavailable in the US. How sad.
ОтветитьSaying that NES "dominated the world" is very misleading, just because Nintendo was the dominant plataform in the US and Japan doesn't mean that that was the case everywhere. Here in Spain, for example, nobody cared about Nintendo until the SNES came, it was all Sega and microcomputers.
ОтветитьShould of been on xbox.
ОтветитьThe FM honestly sounds garbage. The instruments are so bad
ОтветитьIs there any way to display Japanese text even if you buy this game from the US estore?
ОтветитьThis is before the internet dude you had to figure out stuff yourself
ОтветитьPhantasy Star still remains as my most favorite RPG of all time.
Simply Amazing. I would love if they re-launched this classic with 2 or 3 new Worlds to explore and revamp the graphics. On the Nintendo Switch.
I found myself turning off the FM chip even though it does sound better. Great review.
ОтветитьI'll be downloading this game for the Switch cheaper than buying an original SMS cart. I didn't grow up playing the SMS and have never played the system. I love FF series so an reg that is similar this game I think I'll enjoy for years to come.
ОтветитьFM sound sounds like bullshit.
ОтветитьSEGA didn't have the software to compete? Nonsense. If you put the best of SEGA against anyone, they came out on top. They just didn't have the 3rd party support due to Nintendo threatening those companies.
Also, Yuji Naka was the programmer on Phantasy Star, Sonic, and other games. While there's no doubt the games were elevated due to his programming skills, it was the designs and stories of Rieko Kodama that made those games as special as they are.
