Gymnastics' Dumbest Rules

I am a new ish gym nerd. Old 80 and 90 college gymnast. You guys rock !

Could they have like a "crash" area to the sides of the vault? Like some mats or whatever, so they could just crash safely to the side if they are I need of bailing late in the run?

Disagree re saluting before and after routines - I feel it clearly signals the start of what can be judged- I.e, anything after the gymnast salutes to begin could have deductions - if they were to fall over at the apparatus, versus falling over prior to their salute (as a made up example!) Same with end salutes- it gives the gymnast and judges firm boundaries of when judging is to end. That, and as a gymnast, saluting was psychologically time to 'bring it', and it left me feeling GREAT 😛

I think the saluting to start the routine really is…the judge signals, hand up, and the gymnast salutes to confirm/acknowledge they can start…just communication between judges/athletes…and this is coming from a club gymnast from the 1980’s-90’s! LOL just my take on it

sitting in straddles did strike me as a little bit weird even as a younger kid. mostly it's just hard to get up from, and leaves your legs feeling all cramped after. its sort of fun with littles, but definitely agree that it's a bit infantilizing or strange for adult women

Men's gymnastics should have music for floor routines instead of weird silence and slamming noises just so it's less awkward. Throw on some techno.

I've learned a lot from this and agree with some of them. When it comes to the line up in front of the coaches, is that just receiving morning instructions or equipment assignments for the day at national team camp? Is it done in regular gyms?

I get the face painting rule, but realistically how many gymnasts are going to want to do this? I understand they don't want anyone looking like a clown but I think the cat face painting matched with the performance. Than again, probably only the Dutch can pull this off.

Dont get me wrong I love Catalina Ponor but her leos were constantly cut up to her waist! She had to have used glue to keep it covering her cheeks. LOL I dont think she was ever penalized for it. I agree with so many of these things.

I worked at an elite gym and I can tell ya that my beautiful all black velvet warm up pants and jacket were heavily criticized by the parents as being too depressing and why don't I wear happy colors!

Tennis hasn't allowed coaching in Grand Slams until recently and still doesn't allow constantly. From the NYTimes. "The WTA began allowing coaching during matches in 2020, while the ATP debuted coaching last summer, making this French Open just the third Grand Slam tournament to allow it for men’s tennis. Exchanges are limited: While hand signals are now permitted, players and coaches may only talk during the 25 seconds between points when the player is on the side where the coach is sitting. (Outside of Grand Slams, the WTA allows female players one longer conversation per set during a changeover.)"
