Metal work, hm? Okay I‘m in, 10/10 would watch you try. Probably again and again. Would you make a sword or buttons? 🧐

Where on earth are you that any cotton is as expensive as wool? Lol, I basically can't even get wool here, I'd have to have it shipped in and it'd cost a lot, it's basically off the table for me. Plus, I'd have to wear it in the Florida humidity, it's always minimum 50%, usually 60 or 70%. I'd love to hear someone talk about the best materials to deal with hot and humid climates, cause I hear a lot about how great wool is for summer, but they're always only considering dry heat, and that's very different. Maybe it's not bad for that either, but I can't seem to find any info confirming that.

I hear a lot of hate for cotton, but honestly I'm probably still going to make most of my stuff out of it. I think it's a lovely material, it's actually available, very versatile, and I've always thought it looks great. Am I the only one who looked at the picture she showed and seemed to hate so much and saw absolutely nothing wrong with the materials? I thought it looked great! Would making something like that really be so shameful and embarrassing? It makes me worry a bit that I'll end up looking silly, but I honestly just don't see the problem. Anyone have any thoughts? I'd love to hear more opinions.

Anyway, hope I didn't sound negative, just wanted to reach out a bit about the use of cotton, hear some more perspectives. You gals are clearly going for a higher level of accuracy than me anyway, lol. Congrats on the 100k Nicole! You deserve it!

Congratulations!

Also as someone who also hates the "what do you do" question (for wildly different reasons), "historian" does not sound boring. You could try "video editor," and then say you're "not allowed" to say who you edit for. (If you say you're not allowed, it's true!) They'll assume you're entirely behind the scenes and (I edit a podcast) editing itself is hugely boring. That should not get further questions, but if people want to talk software or something, to that will probably take less social energy for you?

I tell people I run a small nonprofit that mostly runs on volunteer work, and then I talk about how badly most organizations treat volunteers and how easy it would be to improve that. Avoids all the awkward questions and speeches and occasional rants I would get otherwise, but I'm not actually lying!

I'm curious about your answer about cotton - what are your thoughts on the reproduction patterns from Colonial Williamsburg? I got the one of the cottons while it was on sale to try to do something like IM.39-1934 from the V&A Museum for a local event

I'm making my first set of stays. As I'm making the eyelets I keep saying "shabby awl" each time I pick up my tool. I'm not even sure it is an awl. I used it to hammer holes in bottlecaps to make armor back in the day. Anyway! This video brought me joy, as does the rest of your channel.

You mentioned in a previous video that at some point in the 19th century, tartan patterns [including very loud ones] became extremely popular and fashionable choices for men's clothing.
In contemporary popular culture, we seem to have a trope[?] of the stern, unfashionable, "no-nonsense" women wearing tartan dresses - usually dark coloured ones [Minerva Mcgonagall comes to mind]. Was there such a shift that made tartan associated with pragmatic women rather than fashionable men, or is it a contemporary invention?

Nicole, stumbling on your shoe-making videos was my first real introduction to the modern world of historical fashion on YT and I just fell in love. I don't sew, not more than an odd throw-together Halloween costume for the kid, but I did major in theatre and always wished I'd gone into historical fashion & costuming for the stage. It might be too late for me to do that (no, I'm too old to learn how to meticulously sew now, kids) but I live vicariously through all of you ladies. Thanks so much for the wholesome, occasionally raunchy &/or silly, but always wonderful diversions from reality. Love you girls! 💜

I just love watching/hearing you all together. I must admit I only actively listened to maybe half of the video (adhd yay) but it feels so nice. Like I'm in a house with friends and it's totally okay to just all do something for ourselves, but we're all still having a good time. I realize how lonely this sounds but I promise it's in the best way possible xD

Your answer to the, ‘most over rated tool’. Has convinced me to take the French curve rule Out of my Amazon wish list.
I have be sewing, and drafting my own patterns for decades. I have never had a French curve. I recently thought it might be useful. As I see it being used in so many videos.
But your right. My clothing has always looked right till now. And no one will be putting a ruler to my clothing.
Thank you!

Morgan's point about does it evoke the historical period? As we hard as might try, we cannot contextualize our bodies and late 20th century, food, medicine, dentistry and social customs cannot be duscarded like the clothes we wear. Even tbe clothes we wear contextualize our bodies into habits of posture, response and relaxation. Not to mention all the social moraes of what is or isn't acceptable behaviour.

This was a delightful Q&A :)
I would love to live in an area where wool and cotton are even in spitting distance of each other pricewise... Or as accessible - the only wool I could find in the last 6 years is the one you want for making a suit (read: gray/black/brown in sublte check/pinstripe or plain).

cotton for sure, it just does not compare to linnen, flax wool or silk in their respective stranthes and still it won out to be our main textile and is everywhere which led to our quality in linnen having gone down by a lot . . .
