Clay bearing soil has a huge problem when it rains. Most clay soil has the same consistancy of soap. When it gets a lot of rain, the clay swells and causes concrete to crack and break up. A level house would buck up and down and would destroy the home
The fix is to lower the foundation, by about 5 feet and fill it in with 2" clean gravel and setting the. On it allowing the foundation to flex and move like a giant spring.

I was actually just down the street when the Champlain towers fell, the whole night there was a crazy lightning and thunder storm after it had settled for a while I thought I heard another thunder sound and shortly after heard all the sirens. Saw what happened the next day. Couldn’t believe it. Complete arrogance on behalf of the property owners

With the Hancock building in boston, the windows popping out was a symptom of other issues and no fault of the windows. The architects failed to consider wind patterns. Wind would be concentrated, enter the lobby and "pressurize" the building which caused the windows to pop out. Even to this day, the entrance to the building is buffeted by strong winds 24x7. I remember at the time seeing about 30% of the windows boarded up. IIRC, they removed all the windows on a story or two as a bandaid to let the air out.

They were trying to make the residents pay the 15 million

I don't think I've ever heard of a bridge described as "structurally inefficient". Structurally DEFICIENT now, that's actually a thing. Those terms don't mean the same thing.

Whoever tries to pin the blame or fire structural designers/engineers because they protested about the safety of a project (it happens ALL THE TIME) should be given a special circle in hell for not listening to those who specialise in preventing incidents like the Sampoong Department Store. This is especially true when coupled with greed.

You forgetting one thing about Sampoong disaster. That piece of garbage owner who indirectly caused the tragedy committed suicide after his wealth dry out.

The biggest mistake is you mentioning Sao Paulo City instead on Santos City, which both cities are in Sao Paulo State, Santos has failures as it is a beach city while Sao Paulo City is around 84km far from from the coast.
Do a better research next time please, people already think that the whole Sao Paulo is f** up.

Maybe we should reconsider building these structures higher than the nose bleed section. I think we just weren’t meant to be that high. I’d be hard pressed to work in a building 100 floors up!!

The Tacoma bridge did not collapse. It tore in pieces. The towers were not damaged. The road was redesigned not to be affected by the wind.

The Vdara did not cost $8.5 billion dollars to build. It was just one tower in a massive development called Las Vegas City Center. The whole project is 18 million sf on 67 acres.

The bigger waste of money was right next door at the Harmon tower. They built 28 floors before inspections revealed the rebar in the lower levels was inadequate. It sat unfinished for 6 years before it had to be taken down piece by piece (no big booms allowed on the strip)

Many buildings in china are TOFU. Cheap to the point they last 20-30y only.
Most buildings do 80y btw.

The tilted buildings are not in the city of São Paulo but in the state with the same name. The city is called Santos. Maybe this explain why they are not well-known. I am brazilian and this is the first time I have heard of them.
