I’m was adopted into a non-interracial family. However, my parents never cared to do my hair, or care about it. They cut it short, and refused to deal with it. I look at pictures from back then and cry, because i knew how horrible i felt back then about myself. I’m now 14, and my hair is down to my waist. I plan on becoming an interracial adoptive mom who actually cares about my kids hair. Thats why i started learning so young. New parents, please don’t adopt a child if you don’t care about their hair. Theres a big difference between not knowing how to do hair, and not caring how to do hair.

I think this is awesome! This lady is really special. I am african american and my grandkids are bi-racial, however the look totally white by skin and by hair and I sometimes struggle doing their hair. One is a by and one is a girl and I really think we all could use some sort of teaching in this area. Bravo to this special person!

Anyone have any suggestions on how to go about bringing up the subject of hair care with a adoptive parent that doesn’t seem to realize her adoptive child has different hair care needs than her biological child? She is a very sweet person and she loves her adopted child so much. But I can just tell she is clueless about her child’s hair care. I keep thinking she is going to eventually realize she needs to educate herself on how to care for her daughters hair. She is actually a public figure and I thought about sending her the link to this video but I don’t want to come across as rude or overstepping boundaries.

Y'all are so much better than me 😭
I have gotten so much help and still struggle so bad. I am not that good with my own hair either and then these grade schoolers don't take care of their hair either since struggle to follow directions so makes even more hard.

I'm trying to do better, I know their daycare wonders that the hell I'm doing. So many hours of trying. We haven't damaged or removed hair yet though so could be worse

Whether or not you gave birth to your child biologically, do try to learn whatever you don't yet know about how to build their self-esteem. Being a great mom doesn't necessarily come through pure instinct. The fact that you have to ask for help to learn things for your children doesn't make you less of a mother. In fact, having the humility and dedication to learn things is a great sign that you have your kids' best interest at heart!

Thank you. I loved this story and the amazing work you are doing.

Reminds me of a time when I was a volunteer reader in a public school 1st grade class. After I was finished with the book a little white girl, whose eyes had intently been on me the whole time, leaned towards me with a question on her face. Her eyes travelled down the length of my locks. She wanted to feel them.

I said, "Sure, honey, you can touch them.. You go right ahead."

Her face was aglow as she smiled and ran her hands down a few of my locks' ends.

Then, she let out a big, "Wow!" She appeared joyously satisfied, as if she'd been sitting there during my entire reading, just hoping for that moment.

I appreciated the little girl's healthy curiosity. Because she was asking, seeking to learn, about a part of my culture. I was happy to oblige her young and open mind.

Can I just say that some of the parents didn’t do this not out of being malicious they were just unaware that hair isnt as important as they thought it was, because I see some people commenting on how “didn’t even bother or are iresponsible” because obviously they must love their child enough to want to adopt them. That being said I really love this because you wouldn’t think the hair would be that important but it actually is

I’m mixed myself and I am so grateful that mother (Filipino) had black friends who were willing to help her. I know too many my age whose parents don’t even bother to learn. It upsets me, especially knowing how important black hair was throughout history. It’s a big part of our identity.

This is SO imporant. My white step mum had no clue how to look after our hair, my bio dad was useless so we would always return home with damaged unkempt hair. It wasn't her fault, especially as it was the 80's back then. Sadly there are millions of grown black folk that still don't know how to care for their natural hair. I'm glad parents of transracial adoptions are seeking out help and knowledge.

I’m a white cosmetologist
Often times I embarrassed in the fact I do not know how to give proper services on black hair
In cosmetology school, what our teachers tell us is “all hair is the same”
Which is technically true in that all hair is made the same, got 3 layers, has the same bonds, grows from the same place
But the care of and the “beautification” of black hair is a whole different area that was never given enough attention
I’m saddened by the fact there are still “black” and “white” hair salons
That we cannot just have salons for all colors of people because the stylist were not given the right education

What do you mean by "natural" hair? So people with straight and not so curly hair is not natural? Why are you afraid to just say: really curly hair? Is it something to be ashamed in saying it so?

I'll tell you what, if there are any black/brown families with white kids, they need a tutorial, too. I brushed a white kid's hair once and it just didn't act right. 😂 It's so thin and fluffy, a good tug may take the child's head off.

I always feel like an idiot because as a kid I thought all hair was the same (I have fine straight hair) so I assumed that it was just brush it and be done with it. After seeing a few videos of people actually working with their curly hair, I've realized that there's so much more to it. I'm glade that there's a program out there to help teach parents who have no experience with curly hair/ethnic hair what to do and how to treat it. I would need something like this if I ever get a kid with curly hair because I can barely style my own hair as it is beyond a pony tail or braids.
