This is a great deal. Their artists need the infrastructure and resources that UMG would bring, which would broaden Afrobeat's reach. A diverse market of industry leaders is always good for business. Many labels like Mavins could benefit from such deals. I hope UMG is aggressive in the market when it comes to investing and making money from Afrobeats...with that aggression, there will be more partnerships and buyouts for Nigerian Afrobeat labels and Afrobeats supporting markets...labels have to do due diligence to make sure they benefit fully from these types of deals though.

These guys have no idea what they are talking about. The reason why we were different is cause of mavin. We used it to project our culture abroad. Now these guys will come and dilute everything and fuck it up. It's just the matter of time. You won't be able to recognize this genre

Wrong. This is good for Mavins, and Mavins alone. I mean no hard feelings it is business. The Mavin team made the right move. But when you have the best African label(structurally to start with) being controlled by the UMG Behemoth, you have a problem.

Dancehall is a perfect example of what happens when you sell out before buying stock. They had solid exports in the 90's and 2000's, which quickly proved dangerous as the music was diluted to fit a mainstream audience, 'particular' type of artists were prioritised and most of all - event promoters could not afford to book their own artists.

Anyway. My two cents.

Most of y'all don't see the negative effects of western lebel wanting to tap in to anything Africa. 1) they will change the narrative to their favor = power. 2) they will have the final decision.
3) control or tie down Africans.
Take a look , our African American brothers complaining every day of how these lebel do scam them .

It means someone else who is Nigerian will have to create a label like UMG so that we don't require Western influences. Its okay to do collaboration here and there with artists worldwide but we need to stop wanting things from the Western world when they take so much from us.
