This scene makes me extra emotional ‘cause I did end up getting a nose job after high school ‘cause I hated how I looked. Lea and Dianna did a great job showing the pain of a teenager going through this. I don’t regret my decision, but I’m sure Rachel would. This song was so beautiful, I used to listen to it on repeat and it was such a downplayed song compared to most glee songs. I have a deviated septum and bump in my nose that people have said I should get done but I have learned to love it and it would probably ruin my voice if I did. I was in tears when they told me they had to remove my tonsils and adenoids and scrape my vocal chords because I feared I could never sing again but they said if they didnt I would lose that AND my speaking voice so I literally had to relearn, at 24, how to sing and my voice is actually much better now and still improving but I definitely feared that change in my voice that you spoke of.

I agree with what you said about it being beautiful when people have distinct features (my cousin has ears that stick out that I think are absolutely adorable) but I'm also a firm believer in changing your body if you're unhappy with it.

However, in the context of the show (I know you're watching it so I won't give any spoilers), Rachel isn't unhappy with her nose, she's just insecure about it's size compared to Quinn's and Finn was (albeit unknowingly) a big part in why she wanted Quinn's nose shape.

Another thing which you can't know without context is that Rachael is Jewish and her idol is Barbara Streisand who has a very similar nose so changing her nose is like changing such a huge part of her identity :/

fun fact: Dianna voice is higher during the first 2 seasons cause she used to think her voice was too deep, but it started to hurt her throat, so after season 3 you can hear the difference

I think someone probably said this already but I didn't go through all 447 comments! Lea Michele was told at 13 to have a nose job, but she idolized Barbra Streisand, who always refused (in the early days, anyway). However, looking at pictures from when she was a teen to now, some of it might be makeup/contouring and aging, but Lea really does look like she had a bit of very subtle sculpting done on the end of her nose. It may not have been enough to change her airways, just the appearance.

I'm going to be completely honest. I hated my nose my whole teenage life. I thought it was ugly, I thought I was ugly and that I'd never look good without a straight, pointy nose. I wanted a nose job to 'fix' something similar to what Rachel wanted in the show. This episode for the first time showed me that noses can be pretty even when not smooth or petite, and this was my first step in accepting my nose and accepting myself. The line 'who am I to be in a position to make me feel so unpretty' is so so poignant and really showed me how much harm I was doing to my self-esteem. Since then I have grown to appreciate my nose and while I haven't accepted it completely, I love myself for the first time. And that is the power of this song and this episode.

I've had to have many surgeries for different illnesses I've grown up with. I've been opened up from just below my breast down to my pubic area about 7 times and the scar is massive but it's the fact that no matter what I do my muscles are not aligned so I'll never have a flat stomach that impacted my self worth. Even if I could have a flat stomach I have an iliostomy bag because all those surgeries were to remove blocked parts of my intestine (severe crohns disease). I had to be fed through my veins which resulted in massive blood clots so I was put on blood thinners. I started to grow back minute veins but they grew all over the place causing only harm. I have very visible veins just under the surface of my skin on my chest and torso. I also had nearly 45 in the one metre of my intestine I had left and because I now had to force feed myself if I wanted to live these veins were irritated by liquids and food so I started having near fatal bleeds with frank blood pouring into my bag. One time I bled so much I became unconscious while emptying my bag. My mum was going to get dinner and then come back and check on me to see if it was time to go into hospital to have blood transfusions. It was horrible if I hadn't lost enough blood for a transfusion they sent me home not understanding how complex my health history is and in the end after what I'm about to explain my doctor who I had since I was little wrote a note to give to anyone who tried to send me home stating my health history and to not send me home. For some reason she came down to check on me in between making and eating dinner. She found me in the toilet, unconscious with blood everywhere. Apparently the paramedic couldn't get a pulse and I got the full works of sirens and lights and I came to in the theatre recovery with a quickly assembled team of about 20 medical professionals were trying to warm me up, fighting to find a vein that was large enough for a line that blood could be pumped in as I was still bleeding out. Mum said that at that point one of the doctors told her that he asked me 'how are you?' and I replied 'Good thank you, how are you doing today?' before I lost consciousness again. Obviously since I'm writing this I'm still fighting to stay alive. I used to hate my scars because I have so many but now they are my battle scars and represent that I'm strong and determined. I am certainly unique. 😊
