I'm out of it now but back in early '06 I owned a 3406E turned up to 550HP that was almost 10 years old. If I was going to keep trucking The time was now to buy new, so I sprung for a 379(last of THAT breed) with a C13. I got it just before Christmas , '97 with an '06 C13. No DPF , no EGR and DEF didn't come 'til 2010 so none of that either. The viva's that came with that however were too weak for the C13 because the oil pressure was too low, running about 20 psi when warm. (I had a very educated man tell me that that oil pump could float 3 C13 engines so wear was no issue) The only problems I had in ten years with the ACERT system was that the # 6 VIVA failed once, and the shop replaced both #'s 5 and 6. The guy that owns it now had that happen again but seems to happen because # 6 is the last one on the gallery for the oil. I made a lot of money with that truck with almost no down time.

I worked for a company that had a fleet of the infamous Cat Ct660 trucks.
13 and 15 liter , all they were was yellow painted Maxx 13 and 15.
I hated those engines, it was always something else, every single day, cracked aftercoolers, pitted cylinder liners, the pto shaft off the back of the head. Absolutely garbage engines. It's why I left heavy equipment.

NoX is actually oxides of nitrogen

Outstanding explanation, sir. Definitely a better explanation than DPC modules give. I do, however, have one small correction-
NOx is representative of nitrogen oxides, not nitrous oxides. Nitrogen oxides are emissions, nitrous oxides belong in your drag car.

That is by far the best EGR system ever built in my opinion pulling exhaust after the DPF system it was brilliant

Sounds like it's counterproductive me you're pulling easier to create less oxygen so the fuel doesn't burn a hundred percent because your dpf to get more ash in it which in return causes more down time and the toe because it dehydrates your engine down to 5%epa is stupid proper running engine that is tuned properly needs none of that equipment to pass emissions

Basically the exact opposite of what they were trying to do it caused nothing but problems and made the engine run like s*** which caused more nox and more co2 what Brainiac came up with the idea of putting concentrated Pig piss in there to get rid of the ash

I'll tell you what Hawaiian takeoff isx15 that has 500,000 miles on it the intake is half of what it was when it was brand new if they think that they're helping emissions by putting an EGR on a diesel engine they're badly mistaken they're causing a problem

Cat on Highway engines were the worst on highway engine ever when they introduced ACERT. You forgot to mention the low pressure Turbo taking out the High pressure Turbo when it failed and boy did a lot of them fail.
Cummins had problems with initially, many issues with their EGR cooler and VGT turbo ( specifically the shroud plate coming loose )
Cat should have kept it simple like Cummins did.

CAT'S EGR system fails all the time in the off road engines. We have C15's in the CAT 740 and they fail more than any other engine around. The pecker head fails in the D8 dozers but the EGR fails and fills the engine with coolant and even hydraulicly lock it up.

I understand it's a delicate balance, but to put it in perspective, for me anyway was the realization that Cat added a second turbo to increase air in the cylinder, then IVA solenoids to relieve some of that extra air

Wasn't the EPA-mandated type ACERT engine the engine that convinced CAT to get out of the truck engine business?

Edit: You answered in the video

Great video A Ape, I like your objective sarcasm on what cost the engine manufactures and industry billions. It's no wonder why Cat stepped away from over the road applications. The EPA continues to bring on the demise of the diesel engine.

ACERT Advanced Combustion Emissions Research Technology. It worked in some engines. It was a very small injection of fuel before the injection cycle. The idea was to add fuel to fire (pre-ignition) at TDC +- (depending on flash file) and burn all of the fuel, instead of adding fuel to compression that caused ignition but did not burn all of the fuel before being expelled through the exhaust. Every injector fired twice which is the reason trim files were very important. Incorrect trim file would cause excessive fuel consumption. Great video!
