Great video. Just dump the background music. It was poorly suited to battle tactics and distracting from your good information.

Alright I've been binging the Roman history videos for like a month now. I got so into it I keep a little note pad by my computer and take notes. I loved it so much I can't wait for the next video and I have been reading ahead on wiki. Now the other day I sat down and played Star wars Empire at war with my cousin and, Neither of us had really played in well over 10 years so it was a learning experience for both of us. However, it did come down a key space battle over Geonosis. I had a large fleet with plenty of ships to spare but I still kept my best ships in reserve to warp jump them into the battle incase things did go south. Which they did, the Ion cannons on admiral Ackbars ship where no joke and started cutting down my ships at an alarming rate. I realized I needed those better ships NOW! Honest to God I said out loud “So it's come to the Triarii!” I just wanted to share that =P

Bruh imagine being some Italic mountain guy overlooking a battle and Rome's most grizzled veterans are sat down picking at grass.

Triiari, sounds like Triage, we still have a triage system in hospitals and it fits into this system as a needed last selection.

The javelin used by hastati was called a pila and was creative as heck and a unique weapon as it was a one it featured a soft flexible iron shift which once in a shield or enemy could not be pulled out and thrown back as it would break off leaving a useless stick. After the victory they would regather and replace the tip and re equip back to soldiers.

Err, all I can see are some grid lines paper moving next to some envelopes.
Where are the guys with spears?
What is a maniple? Where is the image of it? Is it really an envelope?
Are these the paper style wars?

I thought the difference between Hastati and Principes was one of class, rather than experience. The Hastati were the poorer soldiers, and thus were equipped poorly. The Principis were the more wealthy citizens, and they had better gear.

You say the triarii were used rarely, but wouldn't they be used pretty much every time a Roman side lost a battle? Like the commander isn't going to lose without having sent in all of his troops

An excellent synopsis but your graphic content leaves much to be desired. It’s not like there aren’t tons of pictures and movies depicting all this that you could have thrown in. The last battle in Spartacus (Kirk Douglas) had an outstanding scene of Roman maniples moving into combat. There’s tons of material. Take more time to make a video presentation. Your factual instruction is excellent compared to some videos I’ve seen.

From my many hours in total war, I keep thinking, where are the archers?
The checkboard pattern plus archers just wipes armies theoretically superior to your own.
I thought Roman would employ them, when they reorganized.

AMAZING GUYS, I am listening to CAESAR`s COMMONRARIES and he wrote something like that, and for instance, when they line up in battle formation and wait for their opponents to do the same, but if one side refuses to fight the battle for some good reason like they are not on good fighting grounds they usually try to avoid such places like forests as well. So you will get killed for avoiding battle with out a really good reason like people up on hills throwing down everything and any thing. Caesar wrote that many times there are so many people throwing spears, rocks heated up clay balls to set things on fire that they had to hide behind the ramparts which, allowed the GAULS to fill in the huge ditches with what ever they could find like bodies and stacks or bundles of sticks, just to get closer to the walls. We are talking over 80,0000 picked men out of say 300,0000 people who were trying to take over the rest of France in a large migration of their tribe into Gaul now France.

"When things stopped working, they ditched it, unsentimentally." This is simply not true. It took tremendous political clout to force through military reforms. All the stakeholders fiercely resisted changes as they would in any state. Shoddy scholarship.
