Nobody in Germany would be saying "Thank you driver for safty ride". Cause it gives the impression to the driver, "I was so in fear, that you are not drive carefully. Thank you (like a prayer) you did it well" It can be an affort to them. Better saying nothing, as "good bye". A good exsample between Japan and German Culture.
