DON'T become a PT movement police - the perfect movement myth

In school, we are taught to be movement pessimists. We are told what is the right way to move. We are told what is the "ideal" posture. We are told to find all the dysfunctions and altered movement patterns that we can find in our patients. Rounded shoulders, hyperextended low backs. We are told to NOT squat with knees over toes, or to EVER go into valgus (which is when the knee goes "in" during a squat).

This approach has it's benefits: we become really good at identifying "good" movement vs. "bad". We are able to quickly identify movement "faults" and anything that deviates from the norm. We become experts at looking at technique. This is how we have established ourselves as the movement specialists in healthcare.

But… There are also cons to this treatment philosophy. Unfortunately, coming out of school, we become the movement POLICE!! It can potentially harm patients by increasing fear and anxiety associated with movement, which is exactly the opposite of what we want to do.

Instead, we should encourage movement variability, because people DON'T live life with flawless movement mechanics!!!

Let me know what you think!
