You know it's not really vegetas fault. Think about his childhood. He already doesn't respond well to affection and has a hard time showing his feelings but it's not like anyone taught him how to be a parent and even if someone did, bardock basically shows that a saiyan or, at least, a saiyan father taking interest in their children is rather odd.
