Did we miss a shooter's sin that you would like to add to the list?

Probably you will need a first aid kit (and unlikely you will ever need to deploy a firearm) ;that includes a way to stop massive bleeding. Having it and being able to apply a way to stop bleeding is most likely to save a life. . . Better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it. Consult with professionals and leave any modifications to them. Good information.

It's a privilege to learn all of this from a single video. Ken and Bill are beacons of knowledge. And best of all, their experiences still apply regardless of gun brand.

SS 8---"training for the wrong GOAL" e.g. are we training for competition or a sudden gunfight? I (as a civilian) see lots of "civilian YTers" and "experts (ex LE/MIL) go back and forth in their videos. Giving out tips that appy only to competition or "street" (real world). So too many people end up possibly with habits not suited for use should we suddenly be cornered in a stairwell, in an open publc space...ie getting into a "range iso stance/2-hands" ....doesn't appy to real world situations....sadly rules at some ranges prevent "practical training"...we have to FIRE the gun AS IF....there needs to be some standardization of rules in gun ranges as to what is allowed. ..add "moving targets", lighting that simulates dawn/sunrise, night.....scarios we hopefully never find oursselves in won'tall be indoor with halogen lit lights...

SS 9-- STOP putting guns in "rotation". I know too many "enthusiasts" do this. They "Nerd-out". LIke changing a purse. :) It's why some of us have 75 1911's and others have just 2 or 3. :) tAIN/CARRY THE GUN WE SHOOT BEST.. ..IF IT'S 2 GUNS THEN 1 SHOULD BE THE "BACK-UP" ..TRAIN THAT WAY... pEOPLE DO THIS WITH OTHER PRODUCTS TO--"NERDING OUT BY PUTTING THE PRODUCT "IN A ROTATION" (E.G. RUNNERS....THEY HAVE 6 RUNNING SHOES THEY SWAP BTWEEN THROUGHOUT THE WEEK...lol).

iF WE CAN ONLY HAVE 1 PSITO TO KEEP WHICH ONE WOULD IT BE? REVOLVER. 1 SHOTGUN (DEFENSIVE)....NO ONE NEEDS ENOUGH GUNS OUT OUTFIT A SMALL SQUADRON E.G. SWAT team. :)) ...just to feed your addition....

Not sure how easy or practical it is in a self defense situation when you have to act quick, but the best grip control tip I heard about that really helps my accuracy at the range, is the push/pull grip method. The meaty part of the palm in your dominant hand is pushing against the back strap while the fingers in your non dominant grip hand is pulling back on the front strap. Once you got the right amount of push/pull going on, the barrel stays pointing perfectly straight down range at your target

At night or early morning I illuminate interior lights, hazard flashers and turn off headlights. I will put my keys on top of vehicle or on finger and hold both hands out driver's window. Use one hand for any movements. Speak slowly and clearly. You want to be heard over traffic from interior of vehicle. Passengers should extend hands out windows or at least be still. Sudden movements can be misunderstood or escalate tension to accident status quickly.

Everyone involved wants to go home safely.
Your passengers are your responsibility. Do not let them get you killed or arrest

Watched Ken shoot in Marietta Ohio back in the late 70s early eighties. My brother in law Bob Strahler introduced me to colt 1911s gold cups. Ken demonstrated what a 1911 can do. I’ve learned, followed and trained with John Brenner of TDI. All of them emphasize buy more ammo and train with what you will carry. David Bowie corrected my grip and miraculously i improved immediately. Best advice from the Masters; you can’t buy skill, shoot accurately over speed, stock guns are good, buy more ammunition and practice drawing.

Possibilities vs Probabilities is a great point to make.... and weapon lights are a horrible example to use for it.

Half of all time is not daylight, and we're not always outside to begin with. Crime rates, in general, increase in areas of darkness. There is a high probability of needing a light, and it might as well be mounted to your gun leaving your other hand free.

This might have been better advice once upon a time, when weapon lights were prohibitable bulky and heavy, but I struggle to think of a valid reason not to throw something like a TLR-6 on *anything*....

When speaking to gun size, you must consider the shooter’s hand size. My hands are small and a 1911 style is a real struggle, the 365 fits me.

Most of this is spot on , with one exception .

I might be a statistical freak , but of my awareness with collegues , friends , and other direct knowledge include:

76 yard one shot takedown of armed carjacker .

Shoot out with armed robber extending to25 yds.

Rescue shot to save partner from gang of armed robbers at 15 plus yards .

Running gunfight between two detectives and armed kidnap suspect across a suburban lawn .

After already been wounded , having shot lined up on armed robber the length of long office building hallway ( but held fire because of concern with over penetration and innocents on far side ) .

And then the well known recent food court shoot out.

Absolutely , up close and fast is important . But longer distance precision need is far greater than zero , and important to practice also .

Regarding #5 I have a flinch when I try and shoot accurately. But when I shoot fast my shots are a hell of a lot more accurate. I’m a new shooter whose only been weekend shooting for about 4 months now.

The problem i have with putting a light on a gun is, it violates one of the 4 Safety Commandments. Don't point the firearm at anything you don't wish to destroy or kill. If you are pointing the light at anything, including things or people you don't want to destroy or kill, then you are also pointing the gun at them. I prefer a separate flashlight, held with the weak/support hand.

thats funny.. i saw this video where they gave professional shooters stock guns, like glock 19s and sig 320, and they gave amateurs (qualification was they had been shooting less than a year) like atlas race guns, and at 10 years it was pretty even, they all shot good, but at 25 yards and 50, the amateurs were more accurate and groups were about 6 inches tighter.... soooo idk... i mean when i was 13 i had the most expensive paintball gun you could buy, and my friend had the second. there were 5 "pros" mad we were dominating them, they were running their mouths saying it was just our guns and i challenged them to a 2 on 5! we won and neither of us got shot. they didnt say a word after that the whole day.

You guys nailed it. I see these things all the time. I love buying guns, cool guns. However my budget is not very large, I buy affordable quality guns and practice alot with them. I am blessed to have my own range on my land, I can shoot almost anytime as long as I can afford it. I shoot alot of 22 just to get rounds in. I practice drawing with my carry guns almost daily and shoot them as much as possible. It amazes me how little people train and you nailed the mindset of thinking you will perform better than you will.

Just saw this. Thank you gentleman for sharing your knowledge. I am not a gunsmith at all. I do have a friend who is. His advice to me was do not get trigger jobs done on a carry gun. His advice was to get a high quality gun and practice, practice, practice. For one the parts will naturally wear in. Also you will get good with the trigger on that gun.

I give you both an almost 100% as to all your comments, I do have one thing that I, myself, want to inform you about. The gun I have for self defense is a Ruger P89, I got my ccwp in 2006, and when it came to the live fire portion of the course I had not fired my gun since 5 years previous. During the live fire session my grouping was no larger than a quarter, and the reason is because I knew exactly where that gun would hit when I put the sites on the target. It's not just going out and practicing, but when you do your practice sessions learn exactly where the round hits in conjunction with your aim, and don't forget it.

Something that's not really brought up in conflict is the brains natural transition from frontal lobe to monkey brain, the closer a deadly threat is to our body. The point of training is to minimize or negate the monkey brain (monkeys shouldnt have guns), and the adrenaline dump goes to the right places, rather than just overloading you.

Easier said than done, that's the point of good training and repetition.

God bless law abiding gun owners and God bless The United States of America 🇺🇸 🙏

One shooter sin I think you missed, was having one type of ammo for the rang/training & another for everyday use.
As we all know firearms can & are usually picky on what they want to eat. Accuracy & many things change between different types of ammo, many go to the range with round ball & then load everyday use with hollowpoints. They might even train with a lighter grain round & then load for everyday carry with a heavier grain round.

I thought Bill's comment on belts was right on.
We often hear about carrying a gun is supposed to be more comforting rather than comfortable. An actual gun belt takes care of the comfort part and they are actually the best belts even when not carrying.
